ZOO Ústí nad Labem Zoo Usti nad Labem news

Zoo presented its new generel.
The closest to realiasation is probably new exhibit for gibbons (chief zoologist mentioned it could be, optimistically, finished in next year summer), in next three years, elephant house should be refurbished for tapirs and will be build Kukang Café (with lori exhibit).
Til 2027 is planned new africa monkeys (mandrill) exposition, return of orangutans and new aye-aye exhibits.
For more distant future, there is planned return of elephants or asian rhinos exhibit.
There should be also new or enlarged parking lots, by low as well as upper entrance.

Large parking lot is something this zoo needs urgently. Hopefuly it will get high priority in their investment plans.

Aye-aye does sound ambitious. I wish the zoo good luck with this project along with the others.
Well, I would be much more excited about them (and gelladas, whom also feature map in these materials), than about return of elephants and orangutans :D

Guys, are Leon and Ronja the only katanga lions at Usti?

edit:
got the info from zootierliste

According to 2021 annual report yes, I am not sure if there werent some changes during this year

New species arrived - 0.3 blessbocks from ZOOM Gelsenkirchen. They will be mixed with giraffes.

The former elephant house is being rebuilt for another species - Malayan tapirs, visajan pigs and island flying foxes.

Some (hopefully) good news from Ústí for a change -
(former) elephant house - according to zoo website, it should be (re)open with its new inhabitats (tapirs, visayan pigs and fruit bats) in end of april (if I understand correctly)
During this year should be build some provisional paddocks for owls and monkeys and old (and I would say, at least in some cases, terrible) exhibits for them will be demolished then (this or more likely next year, I guess?) - info say "non-expositional", so most of these species won t be visible for some time? Visible should stay de Brazza monkeys, which will be moved into empty orangutan paddock (again, provisionaly)
Two new/reconstructed exhibits in Exotarium house - reptiles of Madagascar and southeast Asia
New species - pygmy hippos (to recent tapir exhibit) and Przewalski horses (former elephant outdoor paddock). Also, some smaller species (prevost squirels, palawan porcupines, elongated tortoise)
Also, gibbons will be moved, as already mentioned.
Some of these projects are already in progress, so I am cautiously optimistic and also happy that something is indeed happening there...

Next weekend, the former elephant house will reopen with Malayan tapir and Visayan pigs.

The former orang exhibit has De Brazza monkeys now (they used to live in old monkey house).

Pygmy hippos should appear in early summer (in former tapir exhibit).

A short article about their bear cuscuses appeared.

They keep an older pair where both animals are too old to breed. The zoo would like to continue with the species in future so they are in contact with an indonesian zoo and discussing an import of young animals.

The species is a diet specialist and should eat only tree leaves. In Usti they were fed also some root vegetables. This proved to be too sugary and the animals got too fat and were put on strict diet. Their only treat is a small piece of avocado they get daily. During summer they get rose flower petals.

Their tamandua pair they obtained last year has bred for the first time. A cub born 30th of March is not sexed yet but keepers think it´s rather a female. The upper part of Exotarium pavilion is partly boarded off to give the new mother sense of safety.

The refurbished reptile tanks in Exotarium mentioned earlier in thread have following species:
SE Asia
- Weber´s sailfin lizard
- Chinese water dragon
- Asian leaf turtle
- elongated turtle

Madagascar
- Madagascar tree boa
- Madagascar day gecko
- Madagascar tomato frog

The nilgai pen will have new species on show. The zoo plans to obtain Indian hog deer and mix them with nilgais.

Same source also mentions already held blesboks, who should went onshow soon (in giraffe paddock) and that this year should start construction of new gibbon exhibit.
Mentioned are also pygmy hippoes ("soon").
Btw visayan pigs and tapir don´t have access to outdoor paddock at this moment, i suppose? Wonder when it will be available to them (I think it should be current guanaco paddock, cause former elephant exposition is reserved for Przewalski horses, but I might be wrong)

The resident Malayan tapir male went to Biopark Fuengirola in Spain gesterday.

Instead, the zoo expects arrival of a young tapir pair. Male from Leipzig and female from Dortmund.

Former tapir paddock (in lower part of zoo) will have (or already have, probably?) new inhabitant, as planned - pygmy hippo (2 years old female), it will be officially presented on 3rd of June

New species: two female przewalski horses from Prague zoo* arrived.
They are already on show in former elephant outdoor paddock.
* more precisely its externa breeding station, Dolni Dobrejov
