Zoo Wuppertal Zoo Wuppertal News

On the 7th of January a Fiji banded iguana (Brachylophus fasciatus) naturally hatched, without the help of an incubator.

Other great news from Wuppertal! Apart from female African Elephant Tika, 30-year old female Sabie is also pregnant and is expected to give birth to her 6th young in the summer of 2023!
Both females have been sired by male Tooth.

Apparently, the zoo is planning further changes in the mountain area. The already expanded takin exhibit will be made even bigger to hold a breeding group. For this, the domestic reindeer will leave for Vienna, and maybe the kiangs will leave/have already left, too (not sure, haven't found anything official). The construction is supposed to be finished in spring 2023, and the takins might be getting company from gorals and tufted deer.

Further update: The last 0,2 Kiangs have left at the end of last year for Tierpark Berlin. Personally, I'm definitely gonna miss them, since they were the only ones of their kind in any zoo in the area...
Their exhibit is already being worked at, the fence demolished etc.
The last domestic reindeer have also left vor Vienna now.

Another species gone: The last toco toucan, for which the zoo achieved the german first breeding in 1986, has seemingly left for Karlsruhe.

What will go in its place?

When will the combined babirusa project open?

When will the combined babirusa project open?

It's in the post I quoted ;) The kiang's and the reindeer's space will be used for further expanding the takin enclosure.
And as I have stated before, I haven't heard anything about the babirusa/macaque project, and apparently there is neither any construction going on on that end nor are there any official informations from the zoo itself in the past months/years, so I don't know if anything is going to happen soon.

Sadly on the 9th of February 16-year old male Lion (Panthera leo) Massino passed away during
anesthesia. He was born on the 12th of June 2006 in Allwetterzoo Münster and arrived with his 2 brothers at Zoo Wuppertal in 2007, currently his two brothers are the only lions in Zoo Wuppertal.

On the 19th of February a female Domestic Yak was born.

Has he been confirmed as having successfully mated any of their breeding cows?
Tooth has with Sabie, her daughter Thika, and perhaps Sweni.
Tooth has grown into a wonderful breeding bull! Sabie and Tika have been confirmed pregnant with Tika due in fall 2022 and Sabie due in summer 2023. And I would assume Sweni is likely in the early stages of pregnancy as well! Hopefully, she finally has a healthy female calf as she has only had bull calves (plus a stillborn female) thus far.

Tooth is very genetically valuable and his future offspring with Sabie and Sweni will be very genetically valuable as all three of them are wildborn.

The zoo has now officially posted an update about the expansion of the takin exhibit. They mention gorals as a new addition (no species given, but probably the only one really seen in european zoos). The post also contains some pictures: Login • Instagram

They don't state a date, however. Judging from the pictures, it seems quite far already, so I hope maybe it will be finished this year...

Absolutely amazing news, assuming it’s not an April fools day joke, two asian golden cats have been born, after being conceived via artificial insemination! A little male and female have recently been born according to the zoo, to mother “Cat-Ba”.

This is absolutely phenomenal news for the European population has been stagnating with no births for the past several years.

It's also already mentioned on ZTL, certainly not a bad jokes database. :)

So we can be pretty sure and it's amazing news.

They also posted a picture of the young ones, so I think it has really happened. :) Though I fear the perspective for the species still isn't great in zoos, that's indeed great news!
