Will this open this year ? I am planning my first zoo visit next weekend, but if this exhibit opens this year i'll postpone Wüppertal until later.

In a January 1st message they mentioned they are still in the planning stages for the expanded elephant facility, which they hope to complete this year, with the actual construction starting in 2026.

I could not find any recent updates about the Rivers of Sulawesi project, but there is still a detour for the construction site mentioned on the zoo's website, so presumably it is still under construction.
 
In January the male Tufted Deer JANNO has been transferred to Leipzig Zoo, Wuppertal Zoo receiving in change the other male PAUL.

Damals stellte sich kein Nachwuchs ein, aber vielleicht funkt es ja jetzt im neuen Zuhause. Die beiden Schopfhirsche sind gemeinsam mit Roten Pandas auf unserer großen, naturnah gestalteten Landschaftsanlage zu beobachten. In ihrem natürlichen Lebensraum in China besiedeln Schopfhirsche feuchte Bergwälder. Sie ernähren sich von Laub, Gräsern, Früchten und Bambus. Die Männchen sind anhand ihrer stark verlängerten oberen Eckzähne, die beidseits aus dem Maul herausragen, gut von den Weibchen zu unterscheiden. Wie alle Hirsche tragen auch die männlichen Schopfhirsche ein Geweih, das allerdings nur gering entwickelt ist. A 12-year female Gorilla called NGUBI arrived in Wuppertal Zoo in February.
Der Grüne Zoo Wuppertal on Instagram: "Neues von Ngumbi Am 21. Februar zog mit der 12-jährigen "Ngumbi" ein neues Westliches Flachlandgorilla-Weibchen im Grünen Zoo Wuppertal ein. "Ngumbi" soll unsere Gorilla-Gruppe verstärken, die derzeit nur aus dem Silberrücken "Vimoto" und dem Weibchen "Grace" besteht. Die Eingewöhnung neuer Tiere im Zoo erfolgt stets schrittweise nach einem festen Schema, das jedoch individuell an die Bedürfnisse jedes einzelnen Tieres angepasst wird. Am Tag ihrer Ankunft machte "Ngumbi" sich zunächst mit ihrer neuen Anlage und dem neuen Tierpflegeteam vertraut. Bereits am nächsten Tag konnten die drei Gorillas sich durch ein Sichtgitter zum ersten Mal in Augenschein nehmen. Der Metallschieber, der die beiden Gorilla-Innenanlagen voneinander trennt, wurde dabei zunächst nur ein kleines Stück weit geöffnet. Die Tiere reagierten neugierig, aber noch zurückhaltend aufeinander. Tag für Tag wurde der Schieber ein Stück mehr geöffnet, weiterhin mit einem schützenden Gitter zwischen den beiden Anlagenteilen. Inzwischen hält sich "Ngumbi" viel am Sichtgitter auf, frisst dort und beobachtet interessiert ihre Artgenossen. Auch "Vimoto" und "Grace" schauen neugierig zu ihrer neuen Mitbewohnerin hinüber. Wenn weiterhin durchweg positive Kontakte am Sichtgitter bestehen, steht als nächster Schritt die Zusamenführung der drei Gorillas an. Aaww, how sad and yes fully understandable intervention by the zoo team. They must really been hard hit by her passing. R.I.P. Grand Ole Lady! She reached a fine age!

She has been a fitting icon for her species here in Europe for a long time ... when most Europeans lacked any exposure to Meso-American tapirs. TBH and Unfortunately: I don't think long term there is much room in Europe for a Baird's tapir population and program ... How I wish it could be otherwise ..., just hope the North American ex situ community will find a way to continue working with the lively Meso-American zoo community for Baird's tapir ex situ and in situ work.

In February female South African cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus) Ayo (*10/05/2011, Wuppertal) was send to ZooParc Overloon, this leaves Wuppertal without Cheetahs. Her former enclosure will be part of the re-organization of that part of the zoo for the expension of the elephant enclosure. Cheetahs will return to the zoo at some point.

On the 18th of February 22 year old male Golden-headed lion tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysomelas) Jerk (*01/03/2003, Wuppertal) passed away.

In February a male Crested partridge (Rollulus rouloul) arrived from Karlsruhe Zoo to accompany the 2 present females which moved to the Freiflughalle in January.

The Hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) that hatched last July is a female!

In March 7 female Lined Seahorses (Hippocampus erectus) arrived from the Naturkunde Museum Karlsruhe, this is a new species for Wuppertal!

In February a Crested quail-dove (Geotrygon versicolor) hatched, not sure if this is a zoo first breeding for Wuppertal. The zoo has 2 breeding pairs, a second pair arrived last October.

In March male Red ruffed lemur (Varecia rubra) Mino arrived from Mandai Wildlife Reserve. The zoo now has 1.2 red ruffed lemurs.

The African pygmy-geese (Nettapus auritus) have moved to a larger aviary at the start of this month.

On the 3rd of April a Grant`s zebra (Equus quagga boehmi) was born.

The EEP of the African Lion has been split into 2, namely Panthera leo leo and Panthera leo melanochaita, Wuppertal will coordinate the P. leo leo EEP. The Asiatic lions have their own EEP.

The European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus) have recently waken up from hibernation.

On the 6th of April 4 Red River hogs (Potamochoerus porcus) were born.

Recently 12-year old female Western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) Mahiri arrived from Zoo Zürich, she is a halfsister of the already present male Vimoto.

At the end of March a new species arrived at the zoo, namely a Silvery-cheeked hornbill (Bycanistes brevis) which can be found in the Großkatzenhaus.

In March a 5-year old male Lesser rhea (Rhea pennata) arrived from Zoo Riga to accompany the already present females.

It's a shame that the cat species at Wuppertal Zoo are becoming less and less diverse.

@Raikou, I would think if that the Zoo Wuppertal has gone through a rethink/redraw and possibly the cheetah may not be replaced. The current zoo maintains African lions, Amur Tiger, snow leopard and 1 elderly phase out species (Indian leopard) in small felids Oman wildcat and Sand cat. I really do not think it is too bad TBH.

The Zebra foal is a female.
Der Grüne Zoo Wuppertal on Instagram: "Neues vom Zebra-Jungtier: Es ist ein Weibchen! Unser am 3. April geborener Böhm-Zebra-Nachwuchs bekam heute zum ersten Mal Besuch von der Zootierärztin. Jetzt wissen wir es ganz sicher: Es handelt sich um ein weibliches Jungtier. Für die Untersuchung wurde das junge Zebra kurzzeitig von der Herde getrennt. Wie fast alle Zootiere erhielt es zur individuellen Kennzeichnung einen reiskorngroßen Transponder-Chip unter die Haut gesetzt. Dieser Chip enthält einen mehrstelligen Code, der mit einem speziellen Lesegerät erfasst werden kann. Nach dem Gesundheitscheck durfte das Fohlen schnell zurück zur Herde. I have been informed:
A) that the snow leopard were transferred to another zoo early this year. Their exhibit will be remodelled for the Eurasian lynx.
B) that the zoo is planning to bring in new sand cats soon for the Small Felid Building.
C) that at some point new cheetah will call the zoo home again. The current female Ayo (13) was sent to another zoo to be with another older female.

I agree ..., just I do not know how genetically important the individuals at Wuppertal Zoo were. You are right to think that in March 2024 their breeding female Aditi unexpectedly became quite ill and passed away. Her companion Boris has now transferred out (probably in consultation with the EEP studbook keeper) elsewhere. This pair had 0.3 cubs in 2016.
