2 April 2015

The Prague ZOO is not the only ZOO in continental Europe which whill show Lear’s Macaws in future. German ZOO Wuppertal is going to build a large walk-in aviary for this and many other bird species as well. This was said by the chairman of the friend members association of ZOO Wuppertal Bruno Hensel and its director Arne Lawrenz. The project is called Aralandia and it includes exhibition of macaws, flamengoes and other bird species in a very large aviary. People will walk through this birdhouse so they can get in close contact with animals.

Birdhouse Aralandia will be a new part of ZOO Wuppertal which already has a very nice and interesting collection of parrots. „To large walk-in aviary (which can be compared with the biggest facilities in Europe) breeding aviaries will be attached. In there, we will see Lear’s and Hyacinth Macaws. Together with other field project this is another step to support conservation of several critically endangered species and their habitats“, ZOO informed about this on its official website on the 18th March. ZOO Wuppertal cooperates on this project with Loro Parque Fundación where Lear’s Macaws are bred regularly. The total expenses are estimated on 3,5 million €.

He died April 2nd, I assume from a heart failure like his father and at least four of his brothers did.

More on the Giant anteater "Chiquita". She was born 4 years ago at Warsaw - Poland and then went to Marwell. She is the first Anteater at Wuppertal after a break of more then 50 years !

On May 15 Asiatic golden cat-female "Cat Ba" gave birth to a young. The animals are kept behind the scenes.

In 2014 Wuppertal started keeping African dwarf crocodiles and now already the species bred for the first time at the zoo. 8 young hatched but 2 of them died. Even worse, also the breeding female died :(.

The last one is a bummer. What species of dwarfs are actually kept (mind there is 3 at the moment)?

On Zootierliste the animals at Wupperyal are called Western dwarf crocodiles - Osteolaemus tetraspis subsp. nov.

Beaver-female Madl gave birth to triplets.
On May 11 2016 twin Red ruffed lemurs were born :).

Fortunately with the beaver ..., these are European beavers. These occur locally in rivers Wupper and Mettmanner Bach. A great conservation and ecosytem restoration story may thus be told.

2 species of Cavy's have young, the common Patagonian and the much raresr kept Chacoan cavy. The last species is relative new in the collection - obtained last year - so Wuppertal is quite happy with this archievement :).
