Zoo Wuppertal Zoo Wuppertal News

Just in case it wasn't already known, the bonobo twins Azibo and Ayubu, and the bonobo baby Akeena have all recently been paternity tested. The father of the two boys is Bondo, who is currently at La Vallée des Singes, and the father of Akeena is Birogu, one of the two adult males in the group at Wuppertal.

Because of the construction of a new large walk-through enclosure - "Aralandia" - the Flamingo's have temporaly left the zoo and have been moved to ZOOM Erlebniswelt - Gelsenkirchen and Planckendael - Belgium.
The new enclosure will house - next to the returning flamingos - a large group of macaws, parakeets and pudus.

A little reprise of the year gone and a look forward to 2017.

Annual review and outlook on 2017

In 2016, we worked diligently on the implementation of our concept "The Green Zoo". In June, we were able to open the new water playground in the Tigertal, which was well received by zoos. The former meadows for water birds were prepared for yaks and prairie dogs. The new residents are a lovely new attraction for many guests. The plant of the Hirscheber was redesigned by the livestock keepers themselves. The construction of the new snowboarding plant is in full swing and is expected to be completed in the first weeks of the new year so that we are likely to open the new plant in the spring.
One of the most spectacular was the birth of the elephant girl "Tuffi" in March and the Okapis "Elani" in October, as well as the pleasing birth of three Schneeleopards (which unfortunately led to a delay in the construction site) and six stump crocodiles in June. The breeding season with the penguins was successful, with all three species there were offspring. In the case of the King Penguins there were even two chicks, Wuppertal is thus the second most successful breeder in Europe this year. Some new animal species were added in the course of the year, including an anteater, Kirk-Dikdiks, a Fijian Iguana, Emus and Soccorota tuba, which have already died out in the wild. The Green Zoo Wuppertal would like to contribute to the preservation of this highly polluted species.
Attention attracted the deaths of the Kodiak bear "Mable" and the Arctic wolf "Dreamer". Overall, the development was well received by the visitors to the zoo and the number of visitors developed positively. At the end of the year, the number of visitors is expected to be significantly higher than in the previous year.
We have also made a lot of plans for 2017 again. The construction of the new Miluanlage will be completed in the first half of the year. As soon as the Milus are moved, the work on the conversion and enlargement of the Takin plant, which are financed by the Zoo-Verein Wuppertal eV, is to begin immediately. The Takine is to be socialized with red pandas. The construction work for the large project Aralandia, which is also financed by the Zoo Association, is scheduled to start in the spring of 2017. For this purpose, the macaws have already been taken behind the scenes and the flamingos have been handed over to other zoos. Both flamingos and of course the macaws will return to the Green Zoo after completion of this new highlight

Which Fijian iguana did they get?

And another Kodiak bear gone............

2 red pandas have arrived from the Welsh mountain zoo and will eventually be mixed with the zoo's Mishmi takin in the former Pere David's deer enclosure.

The zoo was closed for a couple of days, due to an avian flu scare, but the all clear was sounded and the zoo reopened.

Last Asian small-clawed otter left Wuppertal. In Januari already the 15 year and 4 months old male Harry was put down because of health-problems and now the last female - a liitle over 1 1/2 yeaer old Miri - was send to Monde Sauvage in Belgium.

A few questions :

1. Are the Milu and takin exhibits finished ?
2. When will Aralandia be finished ?
3. When will Pilau Buton be finished ?
4. Where in the zoo is the new snowleopard enclosure located ?

1. Milu exhibit is finished and the biggest part of the group already moved.
2. Aralandia won´t be ready before 2019
3. Pulau Buton will be started as soon as Aralandia is ready.
4. New snow leopard enclosure is mainly located on the former bird of prey aviaries
