Zlín Zoo zoo Zlín

close to the Japanese ornamental garden. Could they use land of former vulture aviary for it? Does anybody know?

I assume it will be in the place where the tapir enclosure was, with the Lake access and everything. Maybe only they will enlarge it by incorporating the current crane enclosures into it... building completely new enclosure seems economically unsound for Zlín...

On its facebook zoo announced plans for complex "Nusantara", focused on southeast Asia.
Opening is planned on 2027.
Tapirs should move there from former elephant house, other inhabitants shall be hornbills, adjutant storks, flying foxes, porcupines and reptiles.

Any other species from the region included (clouded leopard, binturong, some Presbityni primates, gibbons, lorises, Bawean and rusa deer)?

No more animals mentioned, I believe.
Gibbon exhibit is however already constructed (Nusantara will be probably located next to it)

Director confirmed for the media, that Nusantara will indeed incorporate current tapir enclosure as he considers it very good and it will allow tapirs to still use the lake.

White rhino female Zanta is expecting a baby in the middle of November 2024.

It is her first pregnancy since her import from South Africa in 2006. She is 20. What are the odds she can have a healthy calf with such history?

Female rhino Zanta had an estimated birth year of 2003, so being nulliparuous ... the chances are 50/50 with her literally at the cut off point. However, she must have been mated between July-August 2023 when she was still way 19...only.

Wat surprises me about Zlin is that the bull Kashka (born in 2005 at Whipsnade) arrived in 2012 and it seems to have taken a very long time to have him socialise / mingle effectively with the 2 wild born cows at Zlin ... (????) and to my knowledge a new bull was never introduced since. I wonder what factors have been at play here ...? I just do not have a logical explanation for this at all.

The first born baby southern white rhino died shortly after birth. Female Zanta, primiparous, is fine.

Hooray, I thought it would never happen..... I guess the bull Kaskha was the sire to this first calf?

First step towards hopefully a first successful rhino birth next! I guess the bull

@Rhino00, thanks for the confirmation. I just wonder why it has taken so long for the white rhino program to get this encouraging result. Any more background on how/where/what they manage their small rhino breeding group?

Both females were not cycling properly. They got hormonal therapy that resulted in this one surprising pregnancy. Hard to tell if any of those two cows can conceive again.

In other news, their Katanga lion pair (Amamboo and Kwale) has tripplets 1.2 - few months old. They stay bts till next spring.

I do hope they continue with hormone therapy and have/maintain close cooperation with Berlin's IZW Institute on rhino and elephant reproduction.

I guess what you describe is sibling behaviour and females synchronising their (non-)cycling.
