A few updates:
New exhibits:
A new exhibit for New Guinea singing dogs (1,1 siblings from UK) was open earlier this year.
Planned exhibits:
- The current mixed African exhibit (Lechwe+...) should be turned into white rhino exhibit this winter, that would allow to bring in a male.
- The construction of the second phase of Etiopie area will start this autumn, with exhibits for hyena, greater kudu, suricata and ground hornbill.
Offspring in last months:
- a fresh Brasilian porcupine younster
- one hand-reared Maguari stork
- 7 Yellow-billed storks
- 2 Secretary birds
- 7 hand-reared White pelicans
(Milky and Painted storks are still incubating, last year 1 Milky and 3 Painted chicks survived.)
New arivals:
- young male greater anteater from Poland
- the spare male of Sattle-billed stork from Dvur Kralove (a female should come from Temaiken)
- young female lowland tapir from Zürich

A new exhibit for Giant otter is prepared for the new inhabitants. They should come from Hamburg in August and the exhibit could be opened in September. They also plan to bring another new species - Malayan tapir - but do notknow any further information.
There is a real plan to bring new Sloth bear from some zoo in India.

This would be very good news - I wish them the best of luck with it as Europe could do with some new blood.
The Giant Otters arrived on 21st August. They are a pair of a sibling males from Hamburg and will be on show when there exhibit opens on 16th September

At Zlin Zoo a Wattled crane has been hatched. The chick is being hand-raised and because they don't wnat ot get the chick imprinted, the keeper is dressed -up in a wattled crane-costum.
The Black-legged seriemas are at the moment the only ones in a European zoo. I've seen them in the late 1980-ties at Avifauna in the Netherlands were they even have been bred succesfully. Don't know what happened with the young.
Also Bristol in the UK has bred them succesfully ( 1973 ).

At Zlin Zoo 2 Secretary birds and 1 Egyptian vulture have been bred Both species were first hand-raised but the chicks have been returned to the parents and in both species this is working well.
The threatened With-winged Wood-ducks have 2 chicks.
More exiting bird-news from zoo Zlin : The African White-crested Hornbills ( Tropicranus ( Tockus ) albocristatus ) have bred !
The only other breeding-result sofar known to me was the World-first breeding of this species at Walsrode which took place in 2004 !

But Zlin bred this species also last year, one male chick left the nesting box in October 2012 and I think it now lives at Prague zoo. Zlin has 4 pairs and Prague has 1, hopefully we will see more chicks.
Nice to see he concerted effort from Czech zoos to breed this lesser known Tockus species too. A bit reminiscent of Rotterdam-Blijdorp with toco toucan pairs (multiple).
