Recently the first 4.1 Iberian lynxes (Lynx pardinus) of this year have been released into the wild by Junta de Andalucía. Two males from the National Iberian Lynx reproduction Center of Silves (Centro Nacional de Reproducción del Lince Ibérico de Silves) named Urki and Ulivo. Two males from the Acebuche Breeding Center of Doñana (Centro de Cría del Acebuche de Doñana) named Usin and Ukendo. The female was born in Zoobotánico Jerez! I am not sure about here name whether it's either Única or Ubriqueña.

News:
A new farm area is set to be built at Zoobotánico de Jerez
. To this end, the local government board approved a budget of more than 22,500 euros at the end of May for the adaptation works necessary for the implementation of this infrastructure.
The works, whose completion period is around three months, are expected to begin imminently. The new space will be built on land that occupies just over 600 square meters. The objective of this municipal initiative is, as stated in the project, “to expand the educational aspect and awareness of animal life”, and therefore, This new space dedicated to domestic animals is proposed. However, the concept does not correspond exactly to the definition of a traditional 'farm', "being more appropriate the installation of domestic animals and those related to humans."
The launch of this farm area and educational area will take place in the existing area where the vicuñas (former Przewalski's horses) were located and in an adjacent area where the bonsai collection is housed. Both the animals and the bonsai will be moved to another area within zoo grounds.
Individuals of Andalusian blue chicken, Andalusian turkey, Andalusian donkey, Grazalema merino sheep, Payoya goat and rabbits could be incorporated. The area would also house some exotic species such as tortoises, iguanas, parrots, and other reptiles, animals that arrive to the zoo as decommissioned or donated exotic pets.

Personally, I don't like farms in zoos.
I have conflicted feelings with it comes to farm areas in zoos too, I like it when it's done well though.
My main issue with this construction is that Jerez has hippos living in a concrete pit but they choose to build a farm area... If the rest of the enclosures at the zoo were up to current standards and money could be spent elsewhere I'd welcome a farm area, but many of the exhibits at this park haven't changed since the 70's...

News:
- A new enclosure for the zoo's Egyptian fruit bats and Amazons will be built. To build this enclosure, the current parrot and bat aviaries will be derivated to rearrange the enclosures in front of the restaurant area. The new enclosures will be built in the garden in front of the otters, giving place to an arrangement of various enclosures accommodated to the needs of both the amazons and bats. The new enclosures will be built out of a wooden structure, and it's anticipated to be a month-long construction.

- According to the zoo's updated map, the vicuñas will be moved to a new enclosure in front of the new Przewalski's horse paddock once the farm area is built.

Iberian lynx captive breeding updates:
- Zoobotánico de Jerez has agreed, at the last meeting of the Iberian Lynx Breeding Committee, to transfer 'Villamartín' to the National Iberian Lynx Reproduction Center in the Portuguese town of Silves due to the good progress of the ex-situ conservation project of the species.
Villamartín, the cub born last March in the zoo and who has remained with his mother Farfara, has been selected as a future breeding male in captivity and for this purpose, he has been transferred to the breeding center.
Likewise, it has been decided, given the advanced age of Fárfara, the breeding female that has been breeding at the Zoobotánico in recent years, not to pair her again. In her place, this week a young female, Silva, was received, born at the Iberian Lynx Breeding Center of La Olivilla, in Santa Elena, where she has remained to date.

Birth news:
- Castilla the Rothschild's giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi) has given birth to a female calf! Jerez, the iconic male giraffe that has lived at the zoo for many years and sire of the newborn calf, passed away earlier this year. The park is currently home to three giraffes, the aforementioned mother and offspring as well as the new calf's brother Sherry, born in 2022.
