Mew Gull

Good weekend for gulls! Had three Kansas review species (less than 10 records) today!

Connecticut in February...Bonaparte's, Ring-billed, Herring, Iceland, Lesser Black-backed, Glaucous, Great Black-backed.

Well I can't really eliminate enough of those (since I saw the gull from a distance) to figure out which species I saw.

Gulls are tough. Different plummage based on year, season, breeding etc. Sometimes even bills and leg color changes (I might have made that part up). a Sibley Guide is crucial if you are gonna be serious about it. Range, size, and habitat can help eliminate some similar species (Bonaparte's and Sabine for example).

Sibley's is too basic for in depth gull study, especially considering Herring, Thayer's, Iceland, and some others. Sibley doesn't cover the different cycles well. Gulls of the America's is an amazing reference for that.

Gulls are tough. There was an Icelandic sighted in Anchorage last summer. It was a juvenile flocking with a Glaucous, Glaucous/Herring Hybrid group. I was a newcomer to the Sport, and was amazed at the knowledge expressed by the Pros as they were sifting through the mass trying spot that Iceland Gull. Green legs? Mew and Bonaparte's have some distinct looks and known nesting sites in the area and were much easier for me.

32) Waxeye (Silvereye) Zosterops lateralis

What is the definition of "gym" in your country? Just making sure I undertand you.

Thayer's Gull
Glaucous Gull
Great Black-backed Gull*
Franklin's Gull
Iceland Gull*
