I heard the distinctive call of a southern boobook owl last night and this morning. Although I wouldn't count it on my list because I didn't lay eyes on it, could it still be accepted on a bird list?

I don't think its really countable, although it is very distinctive indeed. I hear them quite regularly around my suburb, although haven't seen any either. I have heard the NZ subspecies many times too, but again have only seen them very rarely (and not this year).

I don't count heards either (I think I've already mentioned that in this thread) but apparently the Great Australian Twitchathon does count heard species, as long as the conditions are met.

I have put the locations in brackets, in case anyone is in Victoria (I am looking at you zooboy28!) and is after some specific birds.

Thanks nanoboy, the coastal park and marine sanctuary seem like they might have some interesting species for me, will hopefully check them out some time. Are there any other good birding spots in Melbourne's south-east?

Well I have had a small amount of success finding new species in Australia, although many of the species I'd already seen in New Zealand!

63 Rainbow Lorikeet Trichoglossus haematodus

I have only recently ID'd Red-rumped Parrot Psephotus haematonotus, which I saw in the Melbourne Zoo grounds, so that becomes #40.

Since the list above I have seen and identified a further thirteen species:

65 Willie Wagtail Rhipidura leucophrys
66 Nankeen Night Heron Nycticorax caledonicus
67 New Holland Honeyeater Phylidonyris novaehollandiae*
68 Cape Barren Goose Cereopsis novaehollandiae
69 White-necked Heron Ardea pacifica*
70 Straw-necked Ibis Threskiornis spinicollis
71 Darter Anhinga melanogaster
72 Buff-banded Rail Gallirallus philippensis
73 Australasian Grebe Tachybaptus novaehollandiae*
74 Spotted Turtle Dove Spilopelia chinensis
75 Chestnut Teal Anas castanea
76 Cattle Egret Ardea ibis
77 Little Penguin Eudyptula minor

I have been very lucky with grebes, I have never seen one in NZ (despite there being three species), but I have already seen two species in Australia! I think they are very cool - and extremely rare in captivity too.

I think a few zoos/parks have Australasian Grebes.

What do you consider to be SE Melbourne? Mornington Peninsula? I guess the national parks in that area are always a good bet. Cranbourne Gardens is also supposed to be good, but I have never been and cannot speak from experience. Arthur's Seat is a nice day out, with some good bush walking and a few birds too.

For the record, you can volunteer on Saturday 18 May for the annual winter orange bellied parrot count at the Western Treatment Plant (near werribee zoo). The birding there is supposed to be epic. Google it to find the link - I think it's a Birdlife webpage. I received some communication saying to meet at 9am at the corner of Pt Wilson Road and some other road.
