Oh really? Well that makes a lot of sense now then.

For any other readers out there, this trip was to a forest of Mountain Ash. This tree is the tallest flowering plant in the world, and there has been/is an ongoing feud over whether the tallest tree in the world really was/is California redwoods. Even in second place, Mountain Ash are a sight to behold. My camera couldn't capture the scale, but I will try to post a pic later.

Even the ferns were taller than me! My 18mm lens still couldn't get the treetops in frame. (Apologies if the file size is large - I am not entirely sure how to check file sizes and how to compress photos on an iPad.)

All seen during gale-force winds at the Western Treatment Plant over the weekend. The site list was only about 55 species though, since a lot of the usuals weren't around (like black shouldered kite, whistling kite, all the ducks bar shelducks). However, it was a tern-fiesta, with terns in their thousands. Others reported seeing 7 different species of terns, but I could only recognise 2.

nice list! a lot of birds I have never heard of, that are very nice and a lot of species I am very familiar with as an European ;)

My list is still the same, and birds I will not "win", but for mammals and the reptiles/amphibians I will:p with a countdown for Madagascar: 20 days till departure from now! And I just heared that the St. Louis Zoo is funding a large part of my research :)

there's lots of "European" birds I am really happy about seeing, like gadwall, wren, goldcrest. I find them really exciting.

For mammals it looks like the current totals are:
Ituri -- 30
Chlidonias -- 35
lintworm -- 41
Hix -- 48

I think lintworm may well win on mammals, although I will still be chugging away at them too.

Madagascar will be fantastic!!

and Mammal 42:

Brandts/whiskered bat (Myotis brandtii/mystacinus).

The difference is not visible in the field or with sound recordings...

I somehow managed to list Barn Swallow twice, so my count is actually 310 up to this point.
