Finally finished updating my bird life list from Ethiopia and noticed two more that had slipped the Big Year net somehow:

548. Wattled Starling - Creatophora cinerea
549. Scarlet-chested Sunbird - Chalcomitra senegalensis

That should be the last time I have to do that! :D

WOW. You will clean up. Have you been there before for birds? I'm jealous. I'll get there one day.
spotted whistling ducks have been reported at mission beach. Go get them Hix.

Hix, if you're on facebook a couple of good bird pages are NSW & ACT birders and australian twitchers.

my first year mammal since June (!):

72) European hare Lepus europeaus

Are there a few NZ mammals you have still to get? I don't think I've seen hedgehog on your list, and have you got the common rodents/mustelids, and any deer?
I was actually following hedgehog tracks yesterday on the beach while birding, to see if I could find where it was sleeping, but they vanished in the marram grass. I was thinking about going out tonight maybe and looking for one.

I've already seen all four of the rodents this year overseas, so no good there. I hardly ever see mustelids in NZ; in fact I've never seen a weasel or ferret in NZ, only stoats. Never seen a wild deer of any kind in NZ either, which is kind of surprising.

A couple of local winter birds.

411 Eastern Towhee - Pipilo erythrophthalmus
412 Fox Sparrow - Passerella iliaca

Although family commitments occupied the afternoon and early evening today, some canny scheduling from my Dad allowed a couple of hours at the coast in the morning, to visit the always-impressive Grey Seal colony at Donna Nook and do a little beach birding. Was rather whistle-stop, but very pleasant, and filled two gaps in my wader collection this year:

550. Sanderling - Calidris alba
551. Bar-tailed Godwit - Limosa lapponica

:)
