I was lucky enough to work night shift over new years eve. So at midnight I headed to a very reliable sight for nankeen night herons. I wanted something different to start my year list off. Didn't quiet pan out that way but happy to get it third.

It was raining on my brother's farm on New Year's Day, and not much in the way of birds - I only got 10, but picked up a few more today on the way back to Sydney.

Well being as there's snow everywhere up here, I haven't gotten out just yet but I figured I'd through my hat in with what I've seen already:

1) American Crow Corvus brachyrhynchos

Haven't had time to go birding either, but on my way to the store today I managed to spot a handful of birds. Also, just outside my house I managed to see two species of Hummingbirds.

1. American Crow
2. Rock Pigeon
3. Brewer's Blackbird
4. House Sparrow
5. Northern Mockingbird
6. Anna's Hummingbird

Since I have never kept an actual list of birds I have seen, all the birds I see starting now will be lifers.

EDIT: I take it back, the Black-chinned Hummingbird turned out to be a very dark male Anna's Hummingbird.
 
I'm going to try to join this year even though I'm not very good at identifying birds. Hopefully I'll get better. Right now I'm in Florida and today at the beach I saw a few species.

Also caught a very brief glimpse of what was almost certainly a mistle thrush, but I will wait for a clear sighting before I count it.

Add some character to your list! :D Where did you see these birds? Were they difficult to spot? Did you have a target species? etc etc.

Had an interesting morning birding along the completely submerged fields that now virtually surround our area, with other species including a giant (100+ strong) flock of common teal sheltering in a flooded willow stand.
