Had a very good morning trip to Abberton Reservoir today, where I managed to find six new birds and one new mammal for the year list:

106. Little owl Athene noctua
107. Common tern Sterna hirundo
108. Little ringed plover Charadrius dubius
109. Nightingale Luscinia megarhynchos
110. Corn bunting Emberiza calandra
111. Yellow wagtail Motacilla flava

9. Common shrew Sorex araneus

A couple of birds and one mammal to add to the list - one of the birds was one I had neglected to put down earlier, and I wouldn't be surprised if I had actually seen one on the 1st January.

112. Common house martin Delichon urbicum
113. Lesser black-backed gull Larus fuscus - previously missed off list

10. Bank vole Myodes glareolus

Another bat box check today - only the already-listed Soprano Pipistrelles in the boxes today but the woods are always ready with a surprise, and I came away with a first 'daylight' sighting of:

156. Tawny Owl - Strix aluco

:)

A work commitment in the north east gave me the chance to catch up with a long-staying wader rarity:

157. Long-billed Dowitcher (Limnodromus scolopaceus)

Then a tour around some local hotspots turned up a good haul of migrants:

158. Corn Bunting (Emberiza calandra)
159. Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava)
160. Willow Warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus)
161. Ring Ouzel (Turdus torquatus)

164. Redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus)
165. Tree Pipit (Anthus trivialis)
166. House Martin (Delichon urbicum)

Despite being significantly nearer to me than it is to you, I am yet to get up to see that Dowitcher :p which reminds me, I have about a month or so of sightings to post into this thread when I can be bothered!

It was remarkably easy: I parked my car, crossed the road and it was probing away in a puddle just a few metres away. That said, it's in the middle of nowhere and I've no idea how you would get there without a car.

And there you hit the essential issue on the nose :p

Well I've got a lot of catching up to do. Haven't updated this thread in a couple months and several thousand miles!

Ok, so I'm using a new field guide app to record my bird lists, and it doesn't allow exporting via email! I need to plug my phone in to a computer, fire up iTunes, and do it through there. I don't have iTunes installed on a computer... what a joke for a $50 app.

Anyway, rant aside, I'll only post my lifers here:

1. Baillon's Crake - seen at the Western Treatment Plant at the famous 'crake pond', where we also saw Spotted and Spotless Crakes all out at the same time.

2. Grey-crowned Babbler - these were a target species on a failed trip to find some southerly Superb Parrots near Wunghnu (about 250km north of Melbourne).

3. Lewin's Rail - this rare and difficult to see bird popped up for a few days in a small lake in a Melbourne suburb.

4. Mistletoebird - I followed some step-by-step directions from other birders and found this bird along the Yarra River.

5. Pied Butcherbird - also ticked in Wunghnu.

6. Red-necked Phalarope - a very rare visitor to Victoria. This bird was in the same pond at the Western Treatment Plant for a few months, with dozens of birders lined up in a row with spotting scopes each day during the first few weeks to see it.

7. Restless Flycatcher - also ticked in Wunghnu.

That doesn't look like any aboriginal word I've seen before, and I don't think I've ever seen it on a map either - how is it pronounced?

:p
