The below vertebrate additions are from a short break in northern Spain, including two ferry crossings of the Bay of Biscay, plus two days wildlifing in the Picos de Europa and a day zooing at Cabarceno. Also a bonus stop off on the way for some East Midlands Merops as discussed above!

This was a near-repeat of a trip I made in 2015 and highly enjoyable (and the weather was better, meaning more herps and insects!).

Invertebrates still being collated but will follow, including a whole new class for my list and a significant helping of new butterflies...

@Maguari: Last I heard, ferries for England crossed the Bay of Biscay at night, so no chance of prime cetacean viewing. Has this situation now changed (again)?

The Brittany Ferries Portsmouth-Santander service usually leaves early-mid evening and takes exactly 24hr, so you get pretty much a full day on the bay on the way out. Returning the bay is mostly overnight but we had a couple of hours of (dolphin-filled!) light in the southern bay on the way back, then you get the potentially interesting waters around Cap Finisterre in the morning and then an afternoon in the pretty boring English Channel after that. Pretty good overall - last time we had pilot whales and a Northern Bottlenose Whale on top of the dolphins - no whales this time but a side order of a few porpoises. ;)

16) Wood mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus
17) Common mole, Talpa europaea

Invertebrates from the Spanish trip now (mostly) processed. Still working on a few IDs so likely to be the odd latecomer but the main list is as below. Lifers included a few 'technicals' where I suspect I've seen them but prior to starting a formal list.

Up to number 69 were from stops the drive down to Portsmouth, mostly from Bernwell Wood in Oxfordshire, number 70 was found on the ferry and then the rest are from Spain except for the very last one which was in the Solent as the ferry came in.

Those few days almost doubled my 2017 invertebrate list!

All those lovely insects completely upstaged by my first ever wild cephalopod (thankfully identifiable from other local species by sheer size at comfortably over a foot long!).

:)

Still working on a few IDs so likely to be the odd latecomer but the main list is as below.

Feel free to ask me, I'm, more or less, expert in Spanish insects (and I find very strange a list of nearly all butterflies, only one beetle and none insect of other orders)

Thanks! I'll sort some photos out of the mysteries and post them in the gallery. If you're familiar with longhorn beetles in particular that'd be handy!

The butterfly-bias is due to travelling with my dad, who is very much a lepidopterist at heart (he saw a few extras that I missed, though he missed a few of the vertebrates in the process!). There are a couple of Orthoptera already on the list, though (89 and 101), and what's left to ID is mostly non-lepidopterous. ;)

was the cuttlefish just flopping around in a field of wildflowers? It was a surprise right in the middle there!

No, but now I'm slightly sad that it wasn't..!

It was in the harbour of the coastal town we stayed in and was spotted when we went for breakfast on the second day - very much not a species I was looking for on this trip! Surprise ones are always the best. :)
