6/11/2017
266. LITTLE BUTTON-QUAIL* ( almost stood on a juvenile at the football paddock across the road from home.)

I went to Zealandia today. Didn't see any falcons or cuckoos, but found most of the other birds I expected.

After not birding for 2 weeks, I finally got outside again and had a bit of a trip to the Northwestern corner of my country, where a lot of very interesting rarities had been seen yesterday. One of the highlights I missed was a red-breasted goose, but seeing all other species easily made up for that!

271) Western cattle egret, Bubulcus ibis
272) Pink-footed goose, Anser brachyrhynchus
273) Lapland longspur, Calcarius lapponicus

This list contains some very exciting species to me, as in it are representatives of 3 new families for me this year (Gaviidae, Calcariidae and Strigidae), and the last species needed to complete my set of Belgian grebes!

And because primates are being discussed (here: The World's 25 Most Endangered Primates) I thought some people may be interested that the 2017 Big Year mammal list so far includes 41 species of primates. Only one of those (Geoffroy's Spider Monkey) is on the current "25 most endangered primates" list, but several others were in previous versions of that report.

The full mammal list for the year is just on 300.

157. Hen Harrier (Circus cyaneus)
158. Crested Tit (Lophophanes cristatus)
159. Common Guillemot (Uria aalge)
160. Common Scoter (Melanitta nigra)
161. Razorbill (Alca torda)
162. Little Gull (Hydrocoloeus minutus)
163. Caspian Gull (Larus cachinnans)
164. Black-legged Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla)
165. Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis)
166. Glaucous Gull (Larus hyperboreus)

My turn, @Maguari ! ;)
167. Smew (Mergellus albellus)

I very quickly went over all my pictures and memories this year to try and assemble a bit of a list of inverts I saw this year. Not much, but still, here goes! Viceroy, Monarch and Northeastern pine sawyer are from my 2 weeks in the new world, all others are from Belgium.

INVERTEBRATES:
1) Giant woodwasp, Urocerus gigas
2) European hornet, Vespa crabro
3) European honey bee, Apis mellifera
4) Red-tailed bumblebee, Bombus lapidarius
5) Hummingbird hawk-moth, Macroglossum stellatarum
6) Cinnabar moth, Tyria jacobaeae
7) European peacock, Aglais io
8) Small white, Pieris rapae
9) Viceroy butterfly, Limenitis archippus
10) Monarch butterfly, Danaus plexippus
11) Ruddy darter, Sympetrum sanguineum
12) Cockchafer, Melolontha melolontha
13) Firebug, Pyrrhocoris apterus
14) Multicolored Asian ladybug, Harmonia axyridis
15) Seven-spotted ladybug, Coccinella septempunctata

17) Lesser green bush-cricket, Tettigonia cantans
18) Marsh crane fly, Tipula oleracea

20) Domestic house spider, Tegenaria domestica
21) Harvestman, Phalangium opilio
22) Grove snail, Cepaea nemoralis
23) Edible snail, Helix pomatia

And I might as well list the two fish I saw and identified, as well!

Went out for a brief visit to a nearby site where a lifer bird had been spotted yesterday. Unlike many of my other attempts at lifer spotting this year, this bird was very easy to see:

160. Ring-necked duck Aythya collaris

Repeated problems with my account meant I have been unable to put the single new bird I saw nearly two weeks ago on my list - although it wasn't a lifer it was by far the best view of the species I have ever had:

161. Red-throated diver Gavia stellata

And a new bird for the year:

410. Ring ouzel

Both the stoat and the ring ouzel were seen at the Creux du Van, unfortunately and rather surprisingly I missed both Alpine ibex and Alpine marmot there, which would have put me on 86 mammals before flying to the Falklands :p. The stoat was a very nice surprise though ;)

A visit to a wintery Lauterbrunnen and Muerren did not yield any ibex but it did give

411. Yellow-billed chough
412. Golden eagle

Within two weeks penguins will be added and Chlidonias surplaced at the top of the mammal ranking :p

You could edit his post to remove the offending comment :P but inter-moderator warfare would set a poor precedent methinks!

I could indeed just remove all his mammal sightings :p, no need to spend close to 24 hours in an airplane then...

One more bird while I was at Wellington Zoo today:

633) Californian quail Callipepla californica
