At the moment there is an influx of rosy starlings in Western Europe, with the first few just reaching Belgium this week. When I saw one was reported only a 20 minute drive from my home (the second in Belgium this year, and only the 23rd ever), I had to go out and check! After an hour of not seeing anything except for a short-eared owl (which is a good find, as I've only seen those once before), I decided to give up, but upon driving around the corner of the street I saw 2 other birders with scopes, and was able to see it very well and get some pictures. What a beautiful species!

Well back when I was still in Victoria I didn't have a lot of time for birding as I was mostly working. I also didn't keep a year list, so even if I did see one I probably wouldn't have paid it any mind (as I've seen the species before).
And after that the few lakes I visited (waterfowl not being much of a priority anyway) didn't have too much on them.

A few nice moth additions from today and yesterday! Unfortunately I haven't had time to go birding since that rosy starling, so for now it's just what I find in my own garden. Getting to know these moths is fun!

A few updates from assorted visits at the weekend - birding at Spurn, attempted birding that actually resulted in a surprise mammal lifer at Blacktoft Sands, then on Sunday a mainly invertebratey day in Salcey Forest and environs, in which nearly an hour was spent not finding a calling turtle dove and many attempts to Turn Things Over in traditional herpetological fashion eventually turned up two new year reptiles under the same Turned Thing.

There are some more inverts to follow once I've been through and checked them up properly - for the moment the 'obvious' ones follow!
