ZooChat Big Year 2018

One from my garden (23/6/2018):

6. West European Hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus

My first trip abroad, to three different countries, has provided me with only a single addition (although I wasn't expecting anymore), however there were a few unidentified birds from the edge of the Black Forest which may be new, but I only got a passing glimpse of. Seen from the train from Basel to Strasbourg, probably somewhere near Mulhouse, and then numerous locations afterwards (24/6/2018).

76. White Stork Ciconia ciconia

Some I have forgotten to add, the rat from Basel Zoo (27/6/2018). The others from somewhere in Cornwall (7/7/2018).

7. Brown Rat Rattus norvegicus

77. European Stonechat Saxicola rubicola
78. Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus
79. Northern Fulmar Fulmaris glacialis

This time last year I was on 117 birds, but I have been rather busy this year with exams and work being done on my house has meant I haven't been out as much - only going out with the intention of birdwatching twice! Therefore the majority of birds have just been incidental.

Same here! I was very surprised to suddenly see hundreds running away from us in the salt pans of Odiel, near the coast. Not a sight I ever imagined seeing in Europe, that's for sure!

Cool, I'm still working on an idea to do a birding trip to Spain (and Portugal) in the (hopefully near) future and incorporating a fiddler crab site sounds like a great idea!

285) Spotted crake, Porzana porzana
This should, of course, have been #295, and not #285. :p

You definitely should! Birding in the Iberian peninsula is definitely very interesting, and the fiddler crabs were a very impressive sight!

I had a taste of the Iberian (avi)fauna on the field trip to South Eastern France, with species like spotless starling, Iberian yellow wagtail (anyone feeling splitty enough for this one? ;)) and Iberian marbled white. I really want to do the Iberian peninsula properly and have enough time to see the bustard, the raptors and as many endemics as possible (not just birds!).

Also, I had the same great experience with nightjars as @Vision described, only it was not my first time. It's just a magical experience.

Birds
219. European nightjar [Caprimulgus europeanus]

Invertebrates
166. Hemlock moth [Agonopterix alstroemeriana]

272. American Redstart (Setophaga ruticilla)
273. Summer Tanager (Piranga rubra)
274. Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula)

By sheer luck, I saw a wild turkey on the edge of the freeway today (don't worry, it was alive). This is a month after my friends and I passed one on a quiet country road in Connecticut; I failed to see it and my friends failed to see that as a good reason to turn the car around. I was actually starting to worry that I wouldn't see one before going out to west to California (they exist out there, but I've personally never seen one and don't know how common they are).

275. Wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo)

Finally got my shearwaters IDed, and I definitely did it all by myself and did not enlist the much more experienced eyes of the former runner of this challenge:

Birds

160) Sooty Shearwater Ardenna grisea

~Thylo

:p ) and I was wondering when I was going to add this species considering there are quite some right by my house:

79 - Eurasian thick-knee, Burhinus oedicnemus

(Also forgot to add an invertebrate which was seen at Tifnit Beach along with the crab [identified by someone else who told me they were the only mussels at Tifnit Beach])

So, I looked for these during the entirety of June and obviously found none so I concluded they were all in Spain/Southern Europe but while walking in a forest near a golf course (where they are known to occur readily), I found a single individual flying quite close. :P

80 - Greater flamingo, Phoenicopterus roseus

Definitely the highlight of this month and although this latter was very poor in additions, the two new species seen were both cool
