19 - Southern gray shrike, Lanius meridionalis

This species has recently been split into two species: the Iberian shrike (found in Iberia) and the Steppe shrike (found in Central Asia) and I of course thought the Moroccan populations were still considered as Southern grey shrikes (so Iberian shrike post-split) as most split Iberian taxa that occur in North Africa but surprisingly enough, it seems like the recent change includes both of the subspecies we get into Great grey shrike! (and it has been accepted and applied on Observation.org which I follow for my lists).

A lifer gained, one lost, so of course no impact on my life list nor on this year's list or numbers but still a good thing to know.

19 - Great grey shrike, Lanius excubitor ssp. algeriensis*

*I generally do not note subspecies but the two that occur in Morocco are quite different morphologically and easy to tell apart so quite interesting to differentiate, in my opinion.

Some rather nice additions from a bit of birding last weekend from a site just outside Oxford which I suppose is now the closest thing I have to a local patch for most of the year:

1066) Egyptian Goose (not sure what the introduced status of this species is likely to be around Oxford, but I think it's probably countable)
1067) Redwing (I think the last time I saw this species was 2015)
1068) Lesser Black-backed Gull
1069) Long-tailed Tit
1070) Merlin

1071) Brambling

(and in the last few days there's been a vagrant Pink-backed Pelican in Warsaw about 30 mins walk away from my house so it would be extremely easy to see (and would be my second species of vagrant pelican in Poland this year!) if it wasn't for the fact that I'm currently in Oxford and won't be back in Warsaw until December :().

I really need to see some more birds and mammals this year I think. Maybe a week in Jordan in December will help? ;) (taking advantage of Ryanair's brand new and excellently priced route direct from Warsaw to Jordan!)

(if anyone here has been wildlife watching in Jordan before, it looks like I'll have two nights at Dana Biosphere Reserve, two nights at Aqaba, and two nights at Wadi Mujib around Christmas time - wildlife watching info for these sites is rather sparse! I would make an advice thread, but to be honest, I'm not really expecting to get much information. Maybe PM me if you've done any wildlife watching in Jordan?)
