A few additions from the past few days! Seeing a crane foraging on land was a definite highlight. I also went to see a flavirostris greater white-fronted goose, which is a fairly threatened taxon and apparently a potential split. They definitely look different to the European ones!

BIRDS:
127) European stonechat, Saxicola rubicola
128) Common crane, Grus grus
129) Black-tailed godwit, Limosa limosa

MAMMALS:
6) Greater white-toothed shrew, Crocidura russula

7) Western roe deer, Capreolus capreolus

Thanks to a reasonably good influx of birds to the Northumberland and County Durham coastline and surrounding area in the first few months of the year and - even more importantly - a week spent in Iberia which included a number of birdwatching sessions, I've got a pretty decent update lined up......

As usual, lifeticks in bold and (given how many subspecific lifeticks I picked up in Iberia) where possible I will list subspecies; usually the first I saw this year but where a new subspecies was picked up subsequently this will be given priority.

There are stilts in the UK aren't there? (Not implying you should have already seen them, just wondering if they actually established there or not).

I remember my first Cinereous Vultures - absolutely massive birds!

There are stilts in the UK aren't there? (Not implying you should have already seen them, just wondering if they actually established there or not).

They are an occasional but increasing vagrant I believe, with the first proven breeding occurring either last year or the previous.

I remember my first Cinereous Vultures - absolutely massive birds!

Indeed - though the Griffon aren't to be sniffed at either!

To be honest it was more impressive seeing a massive group of about 30 Griffon Vulture and 4 Cinereous Vulture flying less than 50 yards overhead :P

115. Oak Titmouse (Baeolophus inornatus)
116. Glaucous-winged Gull (Larus glaucescens)

Mammals
7. Harbor Seal (Phoca vitulina)
8. Botta’s Pocket Gopher (Thomomys bottae)

Turns out the pocket gopher was actually the third mammal species I saw this year, but I wasn't able to ID it the first time, so now it is #8. Also kind of surprised that it took 1.5 months to see Mallard and Turkey Vulture, two of North America's most ubiquitous birds!

Update from visiting The Living Desert yesterday:

Birds
117. Costa’s Hummingbird (Calypte costae)
118. American Robin (Turdus migratorius)
119. Phainopepla (Phainopepla nitens)
120. Abert’s Towhee (Melozone aberti)
121. Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax)
122. Black-tailed Gnatcatcher (Polioptila melanura)

The night herons were sitting right outside the walk-through aviary that had captive night herons in it, so I was really confused when I saw what I thought were zoo birds on the wrong side of the mesh. This makes the third time I've seen them in a zoo, and the first time they weren't sitting next to a nervous-looking penguin colony (although the Living Desert doesn't have penguins, so maybe they decided to troll their own instead :p)

I've only seen this species in zoos. :p But only one of those 5 or so times was next to a nervous penguin colony.

Yeah they seem to be commonly found wild in zoos. I've seen them a few times off of zoo grounds, though.

I've seen about half my night-herons wild in zoos too. Will say, SeaWorld San Diego is a hotspot for that. Saw some 3-4 very bold night-herons, at least 15 snowy egrets, and a good handful of great egrets and great blues.

Also a small update:

Birds:

115. White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis)

Reptiles/Amphibians:

4. Red-spotted Toad (Anaxyrus punctatus)

Invertebrates:

10. Jerusalem Cricket (Stenopelmatus fuscus)

Now that I think about it, zoos are usually where I find them too. The only time I can remember seeing a wild one outside a zoo was in Hawaii.

Lincoln Park Zoo is infested with night-herons in the summer.

Forgot one:

Birds
122. Verdin (Auriparus flaviceps)

Verdin is 122 and not 123, as I just realized I counted Bewick's Wren twice.

Thank you. Corrected list:

2. House sparrow (Passer domesticus) - 1/1/19
3. Rock dove (Columba livia) - 1/1/19
4. Western gull (Larus occidentalis) - 1/1/19
I haven't been paying to much attention to species lately but these are some I can remember.

5. Canada goose (Branta canadensis)
6. Yellow-billed magpie (Pica nutalli)
