Was back in my hometown the past few days to celebrate July 4th, and last night I was driving down a dirt road and was gifted the best view of a wild owl I've ever had. As I was driving the bird flew down and landed directly in front of my car, where it chose to stay for a few minutes before flying off again!

I am typing this on the plane back to Australia so that is it for European birds, at least for this year, although I have a funny feeling I have missed something, and there is a lizard still to be identified. I saw plenty of blackbirds, a species I see every day at home, but it was good to see them in their natural environment. I would love to have seen a large woodpecker, but that will have to wait for another time.

Time for an update (finally got around to listing all the invertebrates including all the identifications I’ve received since summer).

I went for a wander today to the local seal haul-out. It's about an hour and a half walk around the coastline from my place, and is only occupied during winter, so I go infrequently. Pipits migrate down to this stretch of coast during the winter months too. As an added bonus there were a couple of mollymawks just off-shore.
