ZooChat Big Year 2019

Last week, I went on a 6 days, totally non-touristic (even though a sightseeing day was planned by the organisers) trip to Istanbul. A fantastic city of which I could only scratch the surface of its ornithological wonders due to lack of time but which nevertheless still brought me some welcome additions and exciting lifers!

07/11/2019
BIRDS:

(Saint Joseph Fransız Lisesi, Istanbul)
153 - Hooded crow, Corvus cornix

(Beylerbeyi Palace, Istanbul)
154 - European shag, Phalacrocorax aristotelis
155 - Rose-ringed parakeet, Psittacula krameri

(Üsküdar-Harem arası, Istanbul)
156 - Caspian gull, Larus cachinnans

(Boğaziçi - general area -, Istanbul)
157 - Yelkouan shearwater, Puffinus yelkouan

11/11/2019
(Park near Hagia Sophia, Istanbul)
BIRDS:
158 - Alexandrine parakeet, Psittacula eupatria

The uncontested birding highlight of the trip was seeing a group of 26 Yelkouan shearwaters on the Bosphorus, a rare species nearly everywhere but there, and my first ever Procellariiformes!

European shag which is a very rare species on the Atlantic coast of Morocco (where I live), my only third ever Larus species and a very nice, albeit introduced, lifer were also all very welcome.

Went on a 7 day trip to Bavaria last week and although the biggest higlights were all captive, I also saw some very nice wild animals as well! Quite some lifers including a bunch of species not found or way harder to see where I live and other species which I have not had luck with even though they are common where I live (Tufted duck, Common buzzard etc...).

That coupled with a surprising mammal lifer (seeing how they are common everywhere) made for a pleasant trip when it comes to animal sightings, both in the wild and in captivity.

So 2019 ends up with the same last bird as 2018 but 40 places ahead!

All-in-all, this year was an amazing year birding-wise: I've reached my year goal of 150 bird species seen and I also nearly reached the new tally that I had set as a goal afterwards which was 170 bird species. Non-bird wise I've got some amazing species and lifers like Cuvier's gazelle, Striped ground squirrel, Lang's short-tailed blue or even Guadarrama wall lizard.

I saw 169 bird species this year of which 54 were lifers (~32%).

Some of them include common or very common species that I simply have had no luck with or didn't pay attention to in 2018 such as Red-rumped swallow, Goldfinch, Short-toed snake-eagle, Barbary partridge, Little ringed plover, Black kite, Common buzzard, Tufted duck and many more.

Others were much rarer species that I looked forward to see and had immense luck with such as Eleonora's falcon, Bonelli's eagle, Iberian azure-winged magpie, Red-knobbed coot, Yelkouan shearwater and a few others. Truly some of the higlights of an incredible birding year.

Twitching wise, I got really unlucky as I have dipped all the species I've attempted to twitch except one (Western reef-heron) which may end up not being valid as it could be a hybrid. I hope I get more chances at twitching awesome birds as soon as tomorrow and look forward to maybe finally twitch a countable bird :P

Other misses including missing, once again, those darn Marbled teals (which just seem to be a fake species at this point) that everyone sees but me although I've been in prime habitat for them. Species I've seen last year like Cream-coloured courser and Black terns are also missing but are understandable because they are uncommon while other much more common species I've seen last year but not this year such as Alpine swift, Grey wagtail, Bar-tailed godwit are much more hard to explain.

The highlights of the year, trip-wise, were definitely:

- My first visit of the year to Tamri that got me my first wryneck which turns out to be my first woodpecker (more about that below)

- Getting three lifers during and the days before and after my birthday

- My only visit to Massa of the year which yielded some lifers I had been sorrowfully missing

- My first cuckoo!

- My first true birding-focused trip out of the Souss-Massa region, getting some awesome species at Oualidia and Casablanca

- And finally, some very nice pick-ups at the three countries I've visited outside of Morocco: Spain, Turkey and Germany.

And to conclude up this awfully long post, my usual fun stat of the year: last year, terns were the subject of it as I had 6 tern species marked on my lifelist at the end of the year while I had none at the beginning. This time, it's about woodpeckers, since I had not seen any woodpecker before 2019 and I'm now at 4 species: Wryneck, Great-spotted woodpecker, Iberian green woodpecker and Eurasian green woodpecker.

Yesterday I saw an American Dipper. Tonight I’ll update my list for 2019. On to 2020. I foresee less travel to the arctic this year, so likely going to be seeing a significant drop in my Polar Bear, Musk Ox, and ice seal sightings.

Like @Mehdi, 2019 for me was the year of the woodpecker. Growing up it is a bird that fascinated me, if for no other reason than the cartoon character Woody Woodpecker. Of course there are no woodpeckers in Australia and I had never seen them on my travels. A trip early in the year ended in Toronto allowing some birding there. Finally I saw a downy woodpecker in High Park. Then a couple of months later and during an unplanned stopover in Singapore, I saw a Sunda pygmy woodpecker in Changi Beach Park. Neither reached my childhood expectations for a woodpecker, but at least I had seen them. Subsequent birding in Europe came up blank, one park I stopped at apparently had four species resident and breeding. but of course I saw none, however I did see nest holes. Then a trip to Malaysia. I had a stopover in Singapore and saw two beautiful common flamebacks in Pasar Ris Park. A stay in Fraser's Hill at the end of the trip brought a sighting of a superb greater yellownape. My childhood ambitions had finally been quenched, and like Mehdi, I have four species on my life list.

The mammal of the year was without doubt the dugongs. The time spent with them was just wonderful, a day I will remember.

There are already a couple of overseas trips booked for 2020 and an English birdwatcher is visiting who will have to be shown the sights, so I'm guessing there will be plenty of species for my lists this year. A field-guide to Australian butterflies is arriving for the library soon, so I will also be paying more attention to invertebrates, or at least butterflies.

As I said earlier this year the Big Year really sparked up my animal watching, and I am enjoying it more and more. So thank you to everybody participating.

---

Highlights of the year:

- Being part of a massive Tufted Duck twitch at the start of the year which saw thousands of birders visit the Western Treatment Plant and gained media attention.

- Two species of bittern (Australasian Bittern and Australian Little Bittern), my very first bitterns!

- Multiple excellent days of spotlighting, seeing Greater Sooty Owl and four species of glider on multiple occasions: Southern Greater Glider, Sugar Glider, a Feathertail Glider species and Yellow-bellied Glider.

- Eleven weeks spent on Norfolk and Phillip Islands in the south Pacific Ocean, where I saw 51 species including four Pterodroma petrels, three booby species (one of which was the first on-land record of Red-footed Booby in the Norfolk Island Group), Long-tailed Cuckoo, Norfolk Island Moreporks, all four extant endemic bird species, my first frigatebirds and tropicbirds, Phillip Island Giant Centipedes, Lord Howe Island Skinks and Lord Howe Island Geckos.

- Two trips up to the mallee, which brought me 20+ lifers including:
  • 50 Pied Honeyeater at one location - numbers of this species that are basically unheard of this far south
  • Crimson Chat and Orange Chat, both having good years in the state as a result of droughts inland
  • Cockatiel and Major Mitchell's Cockatoo - meaning I have now seen eight of my state's ten cockatoo species
  • Red-backed Kingfisher, Striated Grasswren, Mallee Emuwren
- Twitching a vagrant Spangled Drongo after two unsuccessful attempts, this year and last.

- Watching two Southern Fulmar fly within 50 m of the shore: one of the rarest vagrants I have ever seen in the wild. On the same day, I also saw my first Southern Giant Petrel, a very rare bird off Victorian coasts.

- Seeing all three of the world's migratory parrots: Swift Parrot, Blue-winged Parrot and Orange-bellied Parrot.

- Reaching my 300th life bird for the state of Victoria in October (Little Curlew) and then reaching my 300th year bird for the state on December 31, 2019 (Restless Flycatcher). I've now seen 327 species in the state of Victoria including 302 for the year.

- Seeing several Australian Pratincole on New Years' Eve, and on the same day a Little Buttonquail three metres from my feet less than an hour before the new year.

My goal for 2020 is to reach 360 bird species for my Victorian life list (33 required) as well as 500 bird species for my world life list (38 required). I am not really planning on targeting a number of species for the year as I have no idea where I'll be travelling but 300 Victorian species would be a nice challenge once again. In terms of particular species, I would particularly love to see Australian Painted-snipe, Painted Buttonquail, Plains-wanderer, Southern Emuwren, Malleefowl, Southern Scrub-robin and Brush-tailed Phascogale in Victoria. If I do travel, I will set additional goals.

Happy New Year!

during this year i saw

150! I’ve finally reached my goal of reaching 150 for birds this year. The birds in this post are mostly odds and ends from throughout the year that I’ve only recently identified.

The reason I’m starting on 147 for this post is because I’m removing fork tailed swift from my list as these were just misidentified welcome swallows.

The quail I saw yesterday in some long grass close to a mangrove swamp. Great to get a lifer as my 150th bird!

Not a whole lot. The Ermine was a neat sighting. I also spotted all three North American Bear species (not counting any possible Spectacled Bears down there in Panama).

Probably will see fewer genuine Arctic species next year.

Just noticed that I counted Northern Ridge-tailed Monitor (Varanus primordius) twice (as 101 and 87) so need to take one off the final reptile number.
