ZooChat Big Year 2020

@birdsandbats Thanks for that information, next time I'm in Chicago I will definitely make time to look them out.

@Pertinax and @Andrew Swales I was being a little harsh about Scotland. 24 years ago, on my only trip around the UK (I have been to London/Oxford/Jersey a few times), I did visit Scotland. It was not in my chosen schedule but the girl I was with at the time had Scottish ancestry so off we went. I was pleasantly surprised as to how beautiful the highlands were, and in the event we only had one day of rain. If I ever get back there I will definitely pay more attention to the birdlife.

I should add an observation to make this legit.

Invertebrates

35. Badge huntsman spider Neosparassus diana

Guess I'm a little late here but I figured I'd throw my totals in because I've been having a wonderful year in terms of birding and wildlife viewing. Most of these are from Texas (Of which I had 430 bird species so far this year!), but others are from Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas in the US.

This is truly quite an amazing list! I wish I could like this twice.

I went to Nudgee Beach Wetlands Boardwalk yesterday which is an excellent spot to tick off some mangrove specialists. I saw lots of Brown Honeyeaters along the mangrove boardwalk that were purposefully confusing me, pretending to be Mangrove Honeyeaters. :p I was also delighted to see 100s of waders (including some juvenile stilts) from the bird hide but just as I was about to lift my binoculars to try and test my limited wader id skills, a low-flying sea eagle sent them all into a panicked flight. I will have to try again soon as that spot seems to be a pretty reliable area for waders. Today at the local park, I was surprised to see a new resident amongst the reeds near a small stream and I later confirmed it as an Australian Reed-warbler. Really nice addition for the list and it just goes to show the surprises that come with wildlife watching even close to home.

I have also finally gotten around to updating inverts (mainly species that are easier to identify than most). Highlight for 2020 has been seeing Australia’s largest species of bee – Great Carpenter Bee Xylocopa aruana. They are huge! Invert no. 46 [Leaf-curling Spider] is actually meant to be no. 45 as I accidently skipped no. 44.

I haven't posted here in a while because it's winter where I live right now, so animals are becoming harder to find, especially new ones. But today, I got lucky. I saw a flock of these in my neighbor's backyard when I was taking my dog outside.

Did you see any of the wild budgies and red-rumped parrots in the school grounds?

A very fun day out yesterday at the Tamri river mouth got me one of my best personal finds!

21/11/2020 (Estuaire de l'Oued Tamri, Morocco)
BIRDS:
173 - Common gull, Larus canus

Common gull is not a true rarity per se in Morocco but it's a species that has only recently started to be more regular on the Moroccan coasts, especially in winter. A few years ago, it was still a species that needed homologation but nowadays with a little of luck and skimming through large gull groups at the right time of the year (which is exactly what I did), you are bound to find one.

37 species in total were seen at that spot, other highlights including eight Ferruginous ducks (second time seeing them ever), a Western swamphen (second time seeing one in my region), a Northern bald ibis, a very closeby Eurasian sparrowhawk as well as a group of at least nine Eurasian crag martins (only my third time seeing them, second time in Morocco)!

Been a while I haven't updated my list on here so I thought I would do so before the year ends. December has been a really good month of birding for me!

05/12/2020 (Embouchure de l'Oued Souss, Morocco)
BIRDS:
174 - Common shelduck, Tadorna tadorna

It started with a quick visit to my local spot with a few nice highlights (Common kingfisher, Bonelli's eagle, five duck species etc...) and one addition to the year list: a group of 12 Common shelducks, which at the time, was only the second time I had ever seen the species wild.

20/12/2020 (Estuaire de l'Oued Massa, Morocco)
BIRDS:
175 - Eurasian wigeon, Mareca penelope

176 - European robin, Erithacus rubecula
177 - Water pipit, Anthus spinoletta

Didn't have much time to bird until the start of the holidays but when I did bird, it was particularly fun! My first visit of Massa since August was a way for me to try to tick Little owl, which was one of the common species I was still lacking for the year, but also to maybe try and get the rare wintering Richard's pipit. It yielded neither but it was still full of higlights: 5 duck species including three Eurasian wigeons, a lifer for me, a Great spotted cuckoo, my second time seeing cranes, our two ibis species, two European robins (only my second time seeing the species in Morocco) and a lifer in the shape of Water pipit. All-in-all, 56 species and a really nice day that apparently wasn't over:

20/12/2020 (Near Draid, Morocco)
BIRDS:
178 - Little owl, Athene noctua

Instead of getting Little owl at my regular spot for them at Massa, where I had missed them the same morning, I just so happened to see one sit on a wall by the road! I was afraid to miss the species for the year so that was a welcome sight.

24/12/2020 (Estuaire de l'Oued Tamri, Morocco)
BIRDS:
179 - Great tit, Parus major

A particularly lifeless session at Tamri, with only 20 species recorded and nearly no ducks nor waders when I'm used to seeing multiple species there, still gave me an addition; namely Great tit, the second time I see them in Morocco.

24/12/2020 (near Aourir, Morocco)
BIRDS:
180 - Merlin, Falco columbarius

The best bird of the day was on the road though, as a Merlin, a lifer for me and a scarce winterer in Morocco (probably the hardest falcon species to get here), flew right above us with its distinctive fast wingflaps. With this, I only have one species of falcon left to see in Morocco to complete the set of Morocco's regular falcon species!

25/12/2020 (Issen, Morocco)
MAMMALS:
4 - Red fox, Vulpes vulpes

26/12/2020 (Issen, Morocco)
BIRDS:
181 - Western barn owl, Tyto alba

I knew that there were barn owls at one of my regular spots so I knew it was only a question of time before I see one there and indeed while looking for them at night, a ghost-like silhouette flew right in front of me! Only the second time I've seen this species.

27/12/2020 (Imouzzer des Ida-Outanane, Morocco)
BIRDS:
182 - Rock bunting, Emberiza cia
183 - Red crossbill, Loxia curvirostra (ssp. poliogyna)

And the best for the end! The region where I live (Souss-Massa) doesn't have many pine forests or any forest (barring eucalyptus, acacia and argan ones) at all and so that means that a few select places have very special species. That's the case of the Imouzzer valley which is one of the few places in my region where the likes of Levaillant's woodpecker, Stock dove, Hawfinch, Eurasian jay etc.. and especially Red crossbill can be seen. I thought I'd try my shot at these, with my main target being Red crossbills, even though it is well-known that mountain birding can be very frustrating with almost no species seen.

On our way up to the village, we got fleeting views of Rock bunting which is a very nice species and a lifer. We decided to stop at a random spot where three or four pine trees stood and to my surprise, there was a group of 4 crossbills! I continued birding even though I got my target and in particularly nice habitats but didn't see much that was interesting, which goes to show how variable mountain/forest birding can be.

All-in-all a very great month of birding that puts me at 183 bird species for the year so far as well as 196 species for Morocco (4 left to reach 200!) and 241 species overall. I'm hoping to bird one last time tomorrow to end off what has been my best year of birding, hopefully with one or two additions in the bag.

Another update right before my usual oh-crap-it's-almost-the-end-of-the-year-I-need-to-go-check-the-places-I-was-putting-off-until-now run. The Barred Owl is the crown jewel here; saw it in broad daylight next to a parking lot at a wildlife refuge, immediately following disappointment at the lack of new seabirds I picked up there. The Sandhill Crane and Varied Thrush (just spotted out the window today) were also lifers for me, so positive news all around for now.

Birds
133. Common Merganser (Mergus merganser)
134. Pacific Wren (Troglodytes pacificus)
135. Ruddy Duck (Oxyura jamaicensis)
136. Canvasback (Aythya valisineria)

148. Surf Scoter (Melanitta perspicillata)
149. Varied Thrush (Ixoreus naevius)

Mammals
25. Harbor Seal (Phoca vitulina)

An update for the past 3 days:

Monday December 28: Did a run through multiple sites in an effort to pick up the few remaining easier passerines and waterfowl in the local area. My efforts netted me two additional species, as well as fantastic photos of a second Barred Owl. Look forward to seeing those posted when I fix my camera-to-laptop connection issues. 3.5/5 day.

Birds
150. Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris)
151. Pine Siskin (Spinus pinus)

Tuesday December 29: Did a walk in a local forest hoping to pick up a couple more passerines that had been spotted there. Somehow saw almost no birds whatsoever. 1/5 day, would not recommend.

Wednesday December 30: It's raining. Made tea in the morning, looked out kitchen window to see several of the exact passerine species I've been trying to find for over a week. 2/5 day; well-played, Birder Gods.

Birds
152. Chestnut-backed Chickadee (Poecile rufescens)

Tomorrow's last stand: running through multiple city parks and praying the rain lets up enough to make me and the birds both less disgruntled.

Last update this year. The warbler was actually the one that I managed to see after a long streak of failed warbler searches (Barred, Yelllow-browed, Dusky).

Birds
233. Hume's Leaf Warbler, Phylloscopus humei

Inverts
197. Northern Winter Moth, Operophtera fagata

--------------

Now, the look back at my goals this year, I completely failed by bird goals. I ended up with 233 birds of which only 7 where lifers (~3%). That is at least 120 species and almost as many lifers less than I hoped to see, but my plans to go to Australia where crushed by the pandemic. I also did not manage to find my 300th species, ending at 296. However, given the circumstances I'm quite happy with the result. There were plenty of highlights to remember and many great species seen.

It was however a good year for herptiles. I managed to find 13 species of which two where new (15%), and both species where very high on my wish list: Great Crested Newt and European Tree Frog. I did completely fail to find an Adder, but that's for next year. My list of fish is shameful with only two species (one lifer, 50%), and I only saw those opportunistically when looking at dragonflies.

Mammals
were also good with 17 species of which three where lifers (18%), and again all three where species I wanted to see for a long time: Beech Marten and Beaver in the Netherlands, and I managed to clear up unfinished business in Italy with Alpine Chamois. Interestingly I saw no boar this year!

Again, my invertebrate list remained just below 200. With 197 species and 83 lifers (42%) I still think I managed a nice list. The fun thing with inverts is that after multiple years of keeping records, lifers are still abundant because there's just so much out there. This year I cleaned up many remaining common butterflies and dragonflies in the Netherlands (though I cannot seem to find any Ringlets!). I also really enjoyed testing out my new Butterfly guide in Italy. I'm still very much a beginner and an experienced person would probably have found at least twice as many species but I had a lot of fun nonetheless.

In total, I saw 462 species of which 96 where lifers (about 21%), and all things considered I'm very happy with that. For next year I'm not going to set goals on how many species I'd like to see, because there's just too much uncertainty. Regardless, I'm looking forward to the many hours of wildlife watching waiting for me next year. Even if the only thing possible is looking at garden birds from the kitchen window!

A few bits and pieces from here and there. Especially happy with the phalarope, as this is a genus I had never seen before and was high on the wishlist for quite some time.

186. Common Redpoll
187. Eurasian Dotterel
188. Woodlark
189. Red Phalarope
190. Common Scoter

I expect max another 3 bird additions for the year. This will be the last year I'll contribute due to a job change, which means most of my observations won't be for sharing and I won't be doing any separate listings...

And a final bird update, of which I was surprised I hadn't seen it earlier this year, as I've been seeing them all around the place these days:

191. Brambling

So that is it for me, it is easily the lowest number of bird species I have seen in this competition, but also the first year I didn't visit Africa since 2012. It will also be the last year I will contribute to this competition, as with my new job a lot of my sightings will be confidential... It was fun to contribute to this thread though for the past 8 years.

The New Year is only 135 minutes away here, so the final update of the year. As for everybody it was a difficult year. But I was very lucky to get a trip to Sri Lanka in at the beginning of the year in February. A fantastic place with fantastic wildlife, I can recommend it to anybody. Here's to a better year in 2021.

Two species picked up on a short walk on a nearby mangrove boardwalk known as "Jacks Beach Walk".
