ZooChat Big Year 2021

The question arises - how do you know what species it was if you only saw it briefly before smearing it across the road? :P

New year, new list. A sudden shift to much more helpful weather led to a rather good first day, and actually one of the most 'normal' days I've had in a while. I was able to hit most of my normal 'first day of the year's birding' sites just as any other year, as they are local and, of course, outdoors - so Permitted by Current Regulations. The rest of January will look very different to usual, as I would normally try to hit Slimbridge and maybe Frampton but they are currently Well Out of the Question. So, these certainly shouldn't be my last January additions (there are at least a dozen species I can see very close to my house at this time of year that I haven't yet seen) but the run of three years of 100 birds in January will certainly end unless something very unexpected happens. Still, some very nice things, including some key slightly-trickier winter species that it's always nice to get on the board early.

Now for much typing.

INVERTS:
1) Two-spot ladybug, Adalia bipunctata

I’m guessing Coccinella septempunctata. But I don’t know what species of ladybugs are in Wisconsin.
You cannot count species you haven't identified. It would be like saying:
1) Duck
2) Some sort of finch
3) Crow?

A few birds seen while at the zoo today:

10) Mallard Anas platyrhynchos
11) Hedge Sparrow (Dunnock) Prunella modularis
12) Californian Quail Callipepla californica
13) European Goldfinch Carduelis carduelis
14) Common Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs
15) European Greenfinch Carduelis chloris

Basically I'll be seeing a handful of birds for each of the first four days of the year, to reach about thirty or so probably, and then I'll stumble to a halt.

Mammals
.white-tailed deer

That’s was all I saw today but of corse there will be plenty more.
If your sightings aren't numbered you don't get included in the tallies because I will have no idea what your numbers are.

Aaand, From my window,
5. American red squirrel.

Mammals, 4.
You have the squirrel numbered as 5, but then say mammals are at 4, but you appear to have only listed two mammals previously.

If your numbers aren't kept straight you won't be included in the overall tallies.

Happy with this start to the year :)

While playing some League with friends I noticed a small beetle-like critter moving over my wall, I stopped the game for a bit to catch it and photograph it for ID's. After asking a knowledge person the conclusion came to the Varied carpet beetle! In Dutch known as the ''Museum beetle'' due to being seen as a pest species by museums as it eats old textile, animal remainders and such. So among invertebrate pin collectors, a true nightmare - my pals words.

INVERTEBRATES
1 - Varied carpet beetle, Anthrenus verbasci

2/1/2021
Since I got most regular species from my area yesterday I only have a handful left to go. Two of them showed themselves during a walk with the dog.

BIRDS
27- European starling, Sturnus vulgaris
28 - Eurasian jay, Garrulus glandarius

Totals:
Birds: 28
Inverebrates: 1

Looked out of the window and saw a pair of Carrion crows at 00:10, so that’s my first species of 2021. A shame, some foxes skulked around until 11 then decided to leave so can’t count them as my first.

Setting a rather modest but realistic target: 70 bird species. I probably won’t even get there but we’ll see :)

Birds:

1. Carrion Crow (Corvus corone)

A slightly more modestly-numbered tally from me as always :D

Birds:

2. Common woodpigeon (Columba palumbus)
3. Eurasian magpie (Pica pica)
4. Rock pigeon (Columba livia)
5. Canada goose (Branta canadensis)
6. Greylag goose (Anser anser)

20. Gadwall
21. Great cormorant
22. Grey heron
23. Great tit
24. Eurasian wigeon
