This is likely my final post for the year, and probably my better one yet. I've returned from a family trip to Texas, that was not wildlife or birding oriented, but I still managed to find some new wildlife I hadn't seen before and got better views of many I had.

Mammals:

12. Coyote (Canis latrans)
I had some roadside-spotting luck with a coyote in the cornfields near Charleston, Missouri from i57. It had been a target species all year so I was rather surprised to look out and see one. I forgot how small they were.

Birds:
It was pleasant to find a new gull species at a rest area on the third largest lake in Illinois
December 22- Rend Lake Rest Area, IL
101. Bonaparte’s Gull (Chroicocephalus philadelphia)

Flying around the city were many surprisingly vocal grackles with the distinctive long tail, I got many views of this common species.
December 24- Dallas, TX
102. Great-tailed Grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus)

White rock lake is the best birding hotspot in Dallas county on ebird, and it lived up to its name. The abundance of gulls, cormorants, coots, herons, and egrets at the lake was astonishing, and I was quite happy to spot some 'wild' parakeets.
December 25- White Rock Lake, Dallas TX
103. Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus)
104. Neotropic Cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus)
105. Ruddy Duck (Oxyura jamaicensis)
106. Gadwall (Mareca strepera)

A walk around this suburban lake yielded two new birds
December 26- North Lake, Dallas TX
107. Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus)
108. Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis)

I was pleasantly surprised on the drive back with witnessing the snow goose migration overhead the farmland on I40 from Arkansas 78 to Arkansas 75
December 28- Dallas TX
109. Snow Goose (Anser caerulescens)

Insect/Invertebrate:
206. Guinea paper wasp (Polistes exclamans)
207. Seven-spotted lady beetle (Coccinella septempunctata)
Seen in and around Dallas

Herptiles:
11. River cooter (Pseudemys concinna) (Ssp. Eastern river cooter (P.c. concinna))
Reptiles:
7. River cooter (Pseudemys concinna) (Ssp. Eastern river cooter (P.c. concinna))
Seen sunning themselves at White Rock Lake

Year-end Totals:
Mammals: 12
Birds: 109
Insects/Inverts: 207
Fishes: 4
Herpitiles: 11
Reptiles: 7
Amphibians: 4

Great-tailed Grackles are obnoxiously noisy by nature, one sometimes wishes they would shush a little more often. :p

I enjoyed them for the four days but I can imagine how annoying they could be after much longer. I suppose common grackles also make noise but nowhere as noticeable as the great-tailed do.

I spent several days at BRT Tiger Reserve in the extreme south of the state of Karnataka, and got to go on several jeep rides through the reserve, with excellent results. Being further south than most of the reserves I had previously visited, the bird life had a far more distinctly ‘Malabar’ feel to it, with many species typical of the Western Ghats present, and I gained many new lifers. Mammal sightings were also far from bad, with plenty of good views of ungulates, carnivores and even tree shrew. Most of these species were identified by the naturalists at the reserve, so they are much more reliable than any of my IDs from earlier on this thread.
Mammals

73. Yellow-billed Babbler Argya affinis
bringing me to just short of the nice round number 75. It’s unlikely I’ll see anything new before midnight today, so I’ll have to settle for this, I guess. I will try to upload pictures of those species which I managed to photograph soon.

For the record, here are the various ‘heard only’ species from the trip, as well as those for which the views were too unclear for identification.
- Red Spurfowl (unclear views)
- Yellow-browed Bulbul (heard only)
- Plum-headed Parakeet (unclear views)
- Common Hawk-cuckoo (heard only/unclear views)
- Black-naped Monarch (heard only)

Sloth Bear, Dhole, and Gaur, very nice indeed!

89) Little Egret Egretta garzetta
For the last week I have been trying my mildest to get to 90 birds for the year. Like everybody, I like round numbers. It's just one bird but all the ones left which I could hope to find around Wellington are either inconveniently-located or simply require luck to be in the right place at the right time. Every day after work this week I have been hanging around the waterfront in town hoping a Little Blue Penguin will show up (they nest around the harbour) but they have stubbornly refused to do so.

Today, on the final day of the year, I went instead to Island Bay on the south coast to see if a Reef Heron would show itself. This is just down the road from where I live and I go there every so often to have a look around - the heron lives there but is very sneaky, so I haven't managed to see him at all this year.

Surprisingly I actually did see him. While watching an albatross gliding around just off the shore the heron flew through the binocular view, and I made it to 90 birds with four hours of the year to spare!

90) Eastern Reef Heron Egretta sacra

With the last of the small mammals identified from my trip to Panama and Chile it appears I'll end at 290. Of course the round number of 300 would've been nice, but as is I'm very proud of what ended up being an extremely productive year!

It turns out unfortunately the distant Geoffrey's Cat photo was likely instead a Domestic Cat. So I replaced #285 with a rodent I've now identified. I also realized I had forgotten to add the dates for my December additions, so I've rectified this as well.

In Review:
118/290 or 40.7% were Overall Lifers
203/290 or 70.0% were Wild Lifers

And if my math is right I added 16 Wild Families (1 Order) and 5 Overall Families (1 Order). 24 Overall Families (and 2 Orders) remain!!

With the last of the small mammals identified from my trip to Panama and Chile it appears I'll end at 292. Of course the round number of 300 would've been nice, but as is I'm extremely proud of what ended up being an extremely productive year!

It turns out unfortunately the distant Geoffrey's Cat photo was likely instead a Domestic Cat. So I replaced #285 with a rodent I've now identified. I also realized I had forgotten to add the dates for my December additions, so I've rectified this as well.

In Review:
118/292 or 40.4% were Overall Lifers
203/292 or 69.5% were Wild Lifers

And if my math is right I added 16 Wild Families (1 Order) and 5 Overall Families (1 Order). 24 Overall Families (and 2 Orders) remain!!

Impressive indeed. You've listed Red-tailed Squirrel twice though - #160 and #248.

Final update! Happy new year everyone!

BIRDS:

362) Velvet scoter, Velvet scoter, Melanitta fusca

(But really 375 - I'll go ahead and bring up again that not counting heard-only birds is weird, motivates people to disturb birds more than necessary, and often sound is necessary for identification anyways :p )

FISH:
12) Whiting, Merlangius merlangus

Sadly not! I was close to getting a good picture of it as it was close (on the side of the road) but it flew off right before I could click on my shutter release button.

Ouch, that kind of thing has happened to me more than once :P

during the midel of october i was forutante to travel to the maldivs to selebrate my mothers 55 birtday. while its nice its one of the worst land animal i onlye got in total 18 birds during two weeks
i also saw a few mammasl but i am still trying to figur out what flying foxes are found there and a shrew. as well as a large fish list that i will try to get in time

An additional bird I think I saw was a velvet scoter. A small flock of seemingly all black birds flew past low over the sea. They had the jizz of ducks in flight and through binoculars I could see white on the wings of one of the birds. This was in late July, so I'm not sure this was the right time of year for velvet scoters to be seen on the UK coast. Any suggestions?

The final few additions from the past few months, with the final bird from the 31st December.
