A stroll at Padley Gorge and Owler Tor yesterday evening added a couple of new birds - this is a superb site in summer for species like Whinchat, Common Redstart, Spotted Flycatcher, Wood Warbler and Common Cuckoo so I'll be back there again before long, but nice to get a couple in the bag on a walk that was mainly a case of just getting some outside time after a day in the house. Also, a couple of beetles I've run into since the last update.

Birds:
156. European Pied Flycatcher - Ficedula hypoleuca
157. Tree Pipit - Anthus trivialis

Invertebrates:
28. Pill Beetle - Byrrhus pitula
29. Cream-spotted Ladybird - Calvia quatuordecimguttata

Not often I do a back to back post this point in the year, but the birding has been good and I crossed the 100 species mark for birds today! Highlight of the day was watching a Peregrine chase pigeons around a parking lot at high speed, and ducking as it banked three to four feet in front of my face! Five new birds for the year today, could've been six but the pesky Empidonax bailed on me before I could pin it to species. Saw baby Wood Ducks in the neighborhood pond this evening and saw the scrub-jay babies in the nest outside my window as well. And somehow I'm still lacking amphibians despite hearing two species of frog recently. Sooner or later frogs!

Birds:

100. Eared Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis)
101. North Rough-winged Swallow (Stelgidopteryx serripinnis)
102. Western Wood-Pewee (Contopus sordidulus)
103. Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater)
104. MacGillivray’s Warbler (Geothlypis tolmiei)

P.S.

Apparently he heard me grumbling and decided to play nice, or he just wanted to make me practice patience, but this evening Mr. Lazuli posed for photos.

The unseasonably cold weather continues, temperatures dropping into the mid-30's F and snow levels dropping to 2,500 feet tonight, very unusual by this point in the year! The result has been a major migrant fallout of various spring migrants, especially swifts, flycatchers, warblers, grosbeaks, and the like. I'm a bit concerned for some of the local nesting birds, hopefully the young will make it through okay. I spent a couple of hours out in the cold today which proved pretty rewarding, spring migrants everywhere and lots of photo opportunities.

A rather crazy local news story related to the fallout, invasion of the swifts!
