Zoochat Big Year 2023

Mammals:
13) Harbour seal (Phoca vitulina)
You'll need to check your numbers. Your mammals were on 14 before this post.

Also I couldn't keep track of your invertebrates once your numbers started going askew, so if you could provide totals I can put them in the list.

Totals for the start of September. Recently some people have suddenly shot higher up the bird and mammal lists!

I was thinking about it - would anyone really want to read a tale of woe and misery though? Not sure where I'd put it either, there isn't a Vanuatu or general Pacific Islands forum.
I mean even if it didn't work out the best, I (and a fair few people on the forum I'd think), find your writing style really entertaining, and maybe a sense of what not to do for anyone planning on visiting Vanuatu? :p , anyways your decision on whether to write more about it or not.

I think we can all learn from tales of woe and misery. Seriously, in many fields people trumpet their successes when it is the failures that lessons can be learnt from.

And the total mammal list for the year - very few marsupials so far:
I did try for musky rat-kangaroos, tree kangaroos, wallaroos and red kangaroos on my recent trip up north but missed on all of them. Nice to see so many bats, though.

A couple of leftovers from my trip north.

Birds
839. Welcome swallow Hirundo neoxena

Invertebrates
85. sp. Lappet moth Cyclophragma cyclomela (new Family)

102. Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus) – 8/6/23
103. Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) – 8/6/23

49. Slender Meadow Katydid (Conocephalus fasciatus) – 8/29/23

Two weeks ago I went on a five-day trip up north to central Wisconsin. Unfortunately, likely due to being at the tail-end of the season for most of my targets, I struck out on pretty much all of the birds I wanted to see. It didn't help that I had been fairly productive in the Chicagoland area earlier this summer, which took care of a number of nice species I did see again up there. Back in Champaign, however, I've had better success, just in time for my first semester of college to start.

Birds
Also seen at Dick Young Forest Preserve, Kane County, 22 July 2023, I guess I left just this one out of my previous post, seeing as this number was missing and everything else was correct

A group of very nice additions awaiting me five minutes from my house the day I got back, including the grosbeak, finally, which has to be the most common bird in the Midwest I was missing. The lifer shorebirds were all very nice, too. Moorman Ponds, 13 Aug 2023.

It was also interesting see my second parakeet species this year. 15 Aug 2023
232. Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus)

And the total mammal list for the year

Good to know I am still able to add one more mammal to the total list! Last week in the garden of my workplace a tiny little shrew was out and about, and it was the very first shrew I could confidently identify! All my previous shrew sightings were common/crowned shrew, which are impossible to distinguish in the field. Also a bonus dragonfly.

Mammals
26. Greater White-toothed Shrew, Crocidura russula

Dragonflies
25. Common Darter, Sympetrum striolatum

Last Monday evening I was at Wilson's Prometary National Park to witness the release of six Pookila (New Holland mice), of which five were bred at Moonlit Sanctuary. Last time I was here was just over 12 months ago when I was there to watch the collection of some of the foundation animals for the captive population. A great thrill. Of course as we were releasing them I can't count them, but I did see a few other animals.

Mammals
129. Common wombat Phascolarctos cinereus
130. Swamp wallaby Wallabia bicolor

Birds
840. Eastern spinebill Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris

Amphibians
6. Striped marsh frog Limnodynastes peronii

A fantastic two days with Orca on Brittany Ferries to Santander. We were incredibly lucky with both birds and cetaceans (as well as seeing tuna, ocean sunfish and Portuguese man-of-war.
