I was very sick from the 31st to the 1st so I didn't even see a single species on the first day of the year because I was in bed all day.The second day,I still flet terrible, but atleast I didn't feel like a gulag prisoner,and I was able to see some birds outside from my window.

I never get time to go birding on New Year’s Day, and the whole of the past week I was busy at school. All the same I tried to keep an eye out for birdlife around me with more than satisfactory results. I saw most of the common, everyday sort of birds, although many such as the bulbuls and mynas have been oddly reticent this past week. A few surprises also presented themselves Black-shouldered Kite, which I usually see only after a few months.
I went bird-watching ‘properly’ on Friday out in the rural landscape near my school, which yielded a few farmland birds I was missing, as well as two Brahminy Starlings out in the village amidst the usual mynas and sparrows.
Not countable, but still notable were a female iora near my school library, a pipit and a hepatic female Lesser/Grey-bellied Cuckoo.

Since my first birding day on the very first day of the year I have been able to add a several species from my local area. The forests here are very quiet now and the weather has been dreary, which doesn't help. Water birds are more in evidence. Notably, I manage to see red-throated diver twice (and I am positive it was the very same individual flying back and forth between two water bodies) as well as horned grebe. Both species are common along the Dutch coast in winter but very rare so far inland, so I was really happy to see them.

Mammals have been especially cooperative so far. I managed to see the two remaining usual suspects in my area in winter (hare and rabbit, after seeing roe deer earlier). Today I saw a red squirrel, which for some reason I'm yet to find out is rather scarce in my neck of the woods. But most excitingly, I managed to see not one but two beavers already! It was quite late in the morning, on a very tourist-y spot, but nonetheless two beavers were swimming around nonchalantly, as if it was the most normal thing in the world. It was a great and rather long sighting, so I enjoyed it thoroughly. Makes one wonder what the rest of the year will bring!
