Happy New Year everyone – looking forward to seeing what wildlife adventures everyone has planned for the year! Today I decided to do a walking tour of the local parks after a few hours spent in the back garden – something a little less intense that last year’s New Year Day so I hopped from park to park to ease myself into the day. Best species for day one was a Three-toed Worm-Skink that made quick appearance and a Keelback was also nice to find – both were lifers in 2022. I also can’t complain with a Pacific Baza and Buff-banded Rail found on the first day of the year as well. A trio of Brown Quail was another delightful surprise in a very suburban park that hadn't been recorded there for many years.

A quick update from me - I've been doing the rounds at the mangroves and rainforests around the fringes and picked up a few nice invert lifers especially the Lychee Stink Bug (wow, that colour!), the Christmas Jewel Spider that had been long on the wish list and the Small Green-banded Blue which is a small butterfly species with a striking blue and white patterning [Small Green-banded Blue - ZooChat]. Closest thing so far to an avian lifer was hearing my first ever Paradise Riflebird at Mary Cairncross on the Sunshine Coast today - an incredible hiss that travels far across the rainforest. I didn't see it after much searching but it's a step in the right direction at least. I did stumble across some well-camouflaged emerald doves by complete surprise to keep me happy!

For this holiday weekend, I participated in a two-day birdwatching tour in Outer Banks, a large group of barrier islands that stretches along the coast of North Carolina. This area is well-renowned for the large array of avian life that can be found here, as it is a major pitstop for migratory birds, thanks to the expansive marshes and pine forests that scatter the land. During the entirety of the trip, I saw approximately 50 species, as well as about 30 lifers; a very good start to the new year! This excursion was a long-anticipated trip for me, and I’m very satisfied with the final results!

Notable highlights of the trip include two species of owl, a plethora of new species of waterfowl, and a Snow Bunting, a species while common in other parts of the US, is a very rare and infrequent migrant to North Carolina.

Yesterday 14th January 2003. A surprising find.

BIRDS

15. Mallard Anas platyrhynchos. A male and a female resting in a fountain in the very middle of the city, full of pedestrians walking and cars running. I never saw mallards before in this place. They were not even scared of people (a small area of grass separate the fountain from the pedestrians, making the ducks to be at a certain security distance).
