Zoochat Big Year 2023

One additional fun lost bird:
684) White-Faced Ibis Plegadis chihi

~Thylo

It has certainly been a very interesting migration season with lots of fun stuff popping up very infrequently across New England. Unfortunately, I've been too busy of late to get out so I have no new additions for now. On the contrary, I have a couple birds to remove from my list... I've been finally going through my Kenya photos to make some identifications and, while so far all the photos I took of birds that I couldn't identify in-field I also can't identify now, I have come to realize I made two misidentifications in-field.

I will be removing the Black-Crowned Tchagra and Southern Black Flycatcher from my list, bringing me down to 682 species.

I should be back with an update on my herps totals soon enough, along with a couple other fun things.

203. Painted Button-Quail.
( I'm 51. I've been birdwatching since I was 10. Yesterday was only the second time I've ever seen painted BQ. )
Not related but Boof- I think you may be the longest-standing Zoochatter who is still an active poster. I am one too but I'm aware you are 'senior' to me...;)

I've just noted that it is five years since I started recording the animals I have seen in the wild in a coherent way. My list now stands at 2308 animals from 22 Classes, 118 Orders, and 421 families. While most were seen during the last five years, maybe as many as 200 were seen prior to that and not since.

The purists will dock me five animals. I allow myself to record dead mammals and birds provided they are in good condition and unlikely to be otherwise unlikely to be seen. There is one bird and two mammals in this category. I also allow myself to record unseen but heard frogs and there are two of these. Frog calls are a standard way of identifying frogs for biological surveys, and it is almost impossible to find a calling frog unless you have at least three people involved. But of course I would never list either here.

I've attached a chart showing how many species I have seen of each Class and zoogeographic realms. These realms are the classic ones, but I have modified it for my personal use. Australia is the political entity, including associated island territories. Oceania is south-west Pacific islands from New Zealand up to and through New Guinea then across to the Wallace Line. These islands share a high degree of endemism and a close relationship to Australia. You will notice no species from the Neotropics, something I hope to rectify next year.

Went back to find the surf scoters that were reported near campus, and I can happily say I found them! There were also white-winged and black scoters reported, but we couldn't properly identify them, even with a scope. We did see 5 scoters, but could only identify two surf scoters.

I think Simon has me covered by a few years. I remember when I first joined. I would read every post daily. Thats not possible now. I usually just read about the Aussie zoos, Singapore and I look at the bird lists.

Have been lax in posting, a few birds from the last couple of weeks. This time next week, I will be in Mexico with three dedicated birding days, so very excited for some seriously cool new species.

171. Green sandpiper
172. Glossy ibis
173. Pink-footed goose
174. Great white egret

Back from a fantastic Mexican trip, perhaps one of the best birding experiences I have ever had. All thanks go to Rafa Calderon, Anuar Lopez and Leonel Bautista, our brilliant guides for three morning birding trips. Whilst it wasn't a dedicated wildlife trip (there's too much food and culture for that!), I still managed a lot of lifers and couldn't be more excited about the animals we saw. I have numerous lizards still to identify from photos, as well, so will post at a later date.

I also think we saw northern harrier from the bus to Puebla, can't see that a lanky, long-winged bird of prey could have been anything else, but was sadly against the sun from a moving vehicle, so hard to be sure. Anyone have any thoughts? If I'd been in Europe, I'd have had no hesitation in calling it as a harrier species.
