Oak Mountain provided a lot more species than I thought it would, including great up close views of Red-Bellied Woodpeckers, a Pine Warbler, a Ruby-Crowned Kinglet and both types of Alabama nuthatches. A bit surprised I haven't seen any of the more ubiquitous cardinals, bluebirds, or blue jays - I heard bluebirds singing and tried to call them, but none appeared. A great day of birding though.

I had some extra time today after school, so I went around the city in search of any rare birds that had been sighted recently. While I did strike out with nuthatches in two different locations, I did find some other nice species, including the same exact Little bunting I saw last year.

Birds

77. Coal tit, Periparus ater 9/1/24
78. Brambling, Fringilla montifringilla 9/1/24
79. Common redpoll, Acanthis flammea 9/1/24
80. Little bunting, Emberiza pusilla 9/1/24
81. Mute swan, Cygnus olor 9/1/24
82. Fieldfare, Turdus pilaris 9/1/24

Goal: 82/200

I have now deduced that the king parrot I briefly saw on New Years Day was actually a Crimson Rosella. However, I have seen actual king parrots many times this year, so the species remains on my list.

Birds
90. Crimson Rosella (Platycercus elegans)

And some more additions from today:

Birds
91. Galah (Eolophus roseicapillus)
92. White-throated Needletail (Hirundapus caudacutus) - my first ever swift!
Yesterday morning I woke up to find that koel in my own backyard! That was when I realised I have only ever heard them before - never actually seen one.

93. Eastern Koel (Eudynamys orientalis)

Since I live in a that is extremely limited in terms of bird life I’ve been able to see only a few species so far, as is usually the case early on in the year when I haven’t been able to go out birding yet. I probably won’t be able to for the foreseeable future.
Birds
1. Common Pigeon Columba livia
2. Black Kite Milvus migrans
3. Koel Eudynamys scolopaceus
4. House Crow Corvus Splendens
5. Jungle Crow Corvus macrorhynchus
6. Common Myna Acridotheres tristis
7. Red-whiskered Bulbul Pycnonotus jocosus
8. Common Tailorbird Orthotomus sutorius
Mammals
1. Three-striped Palm Squirrel Funambulus palmarum

I was a bit shocked that after a week, 3 new species showed up near my feeder within 5 minutes of each other, especially considering that the feeders were nearly empty at the time.

Birds
14) Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus)
15) Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis)
16) Field Sparrow (Spizella pusilla)
One minor update from my backyard this morning.

Birds
17) House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus)

Haven't been able to do much birding at all, as am moving house. Two incidentals were seen over the weekend, though. Hopefully next weekend, I will be able to get out a bit more.

Birds
34. Great spotted woodpecker
35. Common gull

A few more from Staines Reservoirs! Especially pleased to see the long-staying black-throated diver close to the shore. Also missed out no. 36 from my first post - but inserting here for ease.

Birds
36. Common woodpigeon
37. Gadwall
38. Eurasian wigeon
39. Eurasian teal
40. Common goldeneye
41. Black-necked grebe
42. Black-throated diver

I'm going to have to split this all up into multiple posts, and be a few days behind for a little while.

the weekend's not over yet.

...and it wasn't, even though I nearly forgot to post it.

A day at Yorkshire WP on Sunday with a couple of quick stops in a very flood-y north Nottinghamshire afterwards filled in some of the more obvious gaps - a lot fewer things on the wetlands than usual but think they were probably just spread over the hundreds of temporary wetlands usually known as 'fields'.
