Zoochat Big Year 2024

Just realised I forgot to post these from a very pleasant evening in Sherwood Forest earlier in the week. No sign of Long-eared Owl this time, though I may yet have another go. Great night otherwise!

Birds:
175. Eurasian Woodcock - Scolopax rusticola
176. European Nightjar - Caprimulgus europaeus

(UK: 172)

Birds- 163
Herptiles- 11
Total- 189
Heard-only Species- 15
I’m up in the White Mountains of New Hampshire this weekend. I had little time to bird today as I spent time with family, although I did see 2 species where I’m staying which had previously evaded me in New Jersey. I additionally heard a very large mammal in the woods, although I was unable to find what it was (Moose or Black Bear would be my guess)

Birds
164) Blackburnian Warbler (Setophaga fusca)
165) Red-Eyed Vireo (Vireo olivaceus)

Progress:
Mammals- 17
Birds- 165
Herptiles- 11
Total- 191
Heard-only Species- 13

Mammals:
14. Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes)
15. White-Tailed Prairie Dog (Cynomys leucurus)
15. Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis)
16. White-Tailed Antelope Squirrel (Ammospermophilus leucurus)
17. Elk (Cervus canadensis)
Mammals:
18. Wyoming Ground Squirrel (Urocitellus elegans)
Mammals:
18. Eastern Chipmunk (Tamias striatus)
19. Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus)
etc etc
Mammals:
78. Striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis)

You had both 15 and 18 twice, so your total now should be 80 not 78.

A visit to Llyn Brenig added one obvious target, and two bonus passerines, even in poor weather
129 Osprey Pandion haliaetus
130 Willow Tit Poecile montanus
131 Redpoll Carduelis flammea
An unexpected year tick while driving near Lathom yesterday
Birds
129 Barn Owl Tyto alba
You reverted back to an earlier total, so should now be on 132.

Been a while and oh boy are there updates. I've visited Meaher State Park near Spanish Fort, East Lake Park in Birmingham, Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve also in Birmingham, and Tuskegee National Forest, getting me to not only more birds than I saw last year (119) but also surpassing my "realistic goal" of 125! I've also passed the "hopeful goal" of 10 reptiles. No new mammals, but a new amphibian and some inverts as well.

Highlights include a variety of new lifers - the whistling ducks, Purple Gallinule, and Least Bittern at Meaher were particularly exciting, as was the swimming Anhinga, with only its neck raised above the water. The night-heron rookery at East Lake Park was also very rewarding, as I saw both species, as well as a lifer snapping turtle (I also saw a large population of feral Muscovy Ducks, but elected not to count them in this thread). A rural road in Alabama proved fruitful with a lifer Loggerhead Shrike and a highly elusive male Northern Bobwhite calling from dense shrubbery (I was there for almost 2 hours and only ever got fleeting glimpses of him - very shy birds, at least in Alabama). The Swallow-Tailed Kites at Tuskegee were absolutely stunning and probably one of my favorite sightings of this year - they are gorgeous birds and made all the more exciting by the fact that they are not particularly common around here. On the invert side, there have been some nice smaller butterflies like the satyrs and buckeyes, and some great dragonfly and damselfly species - the Springwater Dancer is one of the prettiest damselflies I have ever seen, such a deep royal blue.

In the next few weeks I'll be making a trip to Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge on the Alabama-Georgia border. Hoping to check off some long-awaited waders like Roseate Spoonbill and Glossy Ibis, as well as some yearlies like Snowy Egret, White Ibis and Wood Stork. Crossing my fingers for rails, limpkin and owls too.

Given the fact that I hit 200 invertebrate species on Thursday, this is what the current total comprises of:

12 molluscs
2 millipedes
5 spiders
1 mite
56 moths
13 butterflies
9 bees
6 wasps & sawflies
40 beetles
20 true bugs
7 dragonflies & damselflies
1 earwig
22 flies
5 crustaceans
1 flatworm

*Do note that some common species have not made it onto my lists this year given the fact that many actually require microscopic analysis and I have not undertaken any. All listed species are identifiable by the naked eye.

Although I had been told by another person present that the raccoons were Crab-eating, going through my photos later I believe they were Northern. I corrected this in a later post, which I am sure is now buried in this thread somewhere.
Both species occur in the country. And they look fairly similar. Main difference is the colour of the hands.
Distribution might help too. Where in CR did you see it?

Quick update from the weekend. Saturday I was in Regent's Park doing some zooing and, as one is wont to do in that part of London, saw some Ring-necked Parakeets. This species is already on my main list thanks to Heidelberg but this advances my UK total by one.

On Sunday I went for a stroll at Crowle Moors (adding some butterflies and loads of young frogs) and then late afternoon birding at Blacktoft Sands, where I encountered a couple of new birds.

Arriving a bit late to the party so hope it is ok to join in! Not much of a birder but I do enjoy going out to see what I can find.

I tend to count the species I have managed to photograph, that's the list below. The one exception to this is the Red breasted goose. This was a 'lost' bird hanging about with the Brent geese at Frampton which headed off back with them when they went on their migration route. Still wild but too far off for a shot, but included anyway as cool and probably the only wild one I'll see! These are all UK.
