Zoochat Big Year 2024

A hopeful nightjar in Kirkkonummi from a couple nights ago turned into quite the treat, as a came across an actively calling pair of Tawny owls! I listened to their calls for about 15 minutes until one eventually flew right over me and disappeared into the forest. I did also manage to see a nightjar, though only very briefly.

Tried a couple of small mammal sites this afternoon - a river where I've seen water voles, and a dry stone wall near some bird feeders that can produce Bank Vole and shrew sightings if you stake it out long enough from inside your car. No joy on aquatic rodents, but a very showy Bank Vole was good fun and there was one brief appearance from a new species for the year.

Greetings ZooChat!

It's been a while, I've had a lot of access problems on my end that have made accessing the forum regularly challenging. I have been keeping track of my Big Year progress, however, and it's about time I catch up here on the thread.

Since my last update I've spent a week in Texas (split between Dallas-Fort Worth and the Rio Grande), had @ShonenJake13 visit for some US zoo-going and wildlife watching, birded a fruitful Spring migration, and most recently experienced my second-ever overnight pelagic.

**In late April, an unusual meadowlark was observed at Sherwood Island State Park in CT. Originally misidentified as a Western Meadowlark, this animal was quickly picked out by more experienced birders as something more unusual. Extensive photographs were taken of the bird on the ground and in flight. An expert from New Mexico was contacted who agreed with the tentative ID of Chihuahuan Meadowlark. The bird was clearly paler in color, had thinner streaking on the flanks, and the tail feathers were near-white. Unfortunately, the bird was also extremely quiet and despite extensive efforts to obtain recordings, none were ever taken. Some individuals did attempt playback. The bird never responded to Eastern Meadowlark calls and it maybe responded once to a Chihuahuan Meadowlark call, though no eyes were on the bird when it potentially responded. In the end, State authorities decided not to accept the record unless definitive vocal or DNA evidence from the bird could be obtained. Shortly afterwards, local birders (oddly) lost all interest in this animal and it quietly disappeared altogether. Some have retroactively decided it was an oddball Eastern all along. Personally, I believe it was a Chihuahuan, but since no official consensus was ever made, I am not counting it towards my Big Year total.

I’ve been doing a lot of birdwatching in the past month, and have gotten several new species. Most of them were on one-off occasions, with the exception of a trip to Lake Henry in the Ramapo Valley where I saw 3 new species. Went on a walk today with the local Audubon Society in the Harrier Meadows, a location closed to the public. While a big highlight was seeing a rare Little Blue Heron, I already saw an individual in Ocean City, however a few small groups of Bobolink did fly by to satisfy my life list.

Spring has arrived, around home parrots and maned ducks are searching for nesting hollows. I'm looking forward to seeing more birds around, but so far this is the only new one recently for this year:

437. Brown thornbill Acanthiza pusilla

I went down to Wilsons Promatory National Park for another release of Pookelas last night, and on the drive down got a good view of this goshawk.

438. Brown goshawk Accipiter fasciatus

On arrival I had about ten minutes for a little bird watching before others arrived. There was plenty of activity, but I only saw one new species.

439. Crescent honeyeater Phylidonyris pyrrhopterus

After watching the release, we searched for florescent scorpions with the aid of an ultraviolet torch:

53. Forest scorpion Cercophonius squama (new Family)

Arriving back at the car, grazing nearby.

41. Bare-nosed wombat Vombatus ursinus

Had a wonderful trip to Härjedalen with some other nature-loving youths.

The trip was completely free and was paid for by Fältbiologerna, the organization that held the trip. It is an organization where anyone interested in nature and between 12-26 can join; they don't even have a membership fee.

Härjdedalen is the most southern part of the distribution in Sweden for many alpine and northerly species.

We spent the 14th–19th of June experiencing the amazing landscape, flora, and fauna. Highlights were all the lifers, albeit there were some disappointing dips like Gyrfalcon, Golden Eagle, Ring, Ouzel, Jack snipe, and Norway Lemming. The first half of the trip was spent at Flatruet and the second half at Fulufjällets National Park. We did a short stop between the two at a place called Nipfjället, which provided us with excellent views of a rock ptarmigan and a heard-only Dotterel.

I really like vagrants, so the Ring duck in a small lake at Fulufjället was probably my favorite.

Single new bird. Always slightly dubious about potential escapees, but this one seems legitimate, and has been widely twitched.

261. Ferruginous duck

Again, just a singleton avian addition to my year list. I will be in Istanbul the week after next and then on a specifically bird-watching trip to the Gambia, so hopefully will get some nice additions soon!
