The snake was one of the racers but as I have no pictures it will likely stay forever unIDed.

It has been over a month since my last update and while it is that time of year where one can have a marvelous day of wildlife-watching and still have zero additions, it still pains me to have only one to note, despite have ample opportunity to see wildlife. Not only do I have more free time, but work has also shifted a bit from office work and fieldwork in urban areas to fieldwork in woodlands. Spending all day in a forest, particularly when one is allowed or even required to stray from the paths, is a good way to occasionally flush a woodcock or a band of roe deer. It has not yielded any now species for the year list though.

The one addition was from an afternoon spend with a friend, when we stumbled upon a water rail when walking along a small stream.

Birds
219. Water Rail, Rallus aquaticus

The 2024 Clements update was officially released today. Clements is the taxonomy I use for my personal lists, so its yearly updates are when I update my lists. While there were actually quite a few changes which affected my lists this year, only one actually impacted my year list this year - the split of House Wren. I've seen both Northern and Southern House Wrens this year, so my bird total for the year is now 505:

Birds
505. Northern House Wren Troglodytes aedon

This is also the final Clements update ever, next year around this time I will begin to translate my lists to the new AviList taxonomy.
If I had a nickel for every time I've left in the middle of class to see an owl elsewhere on campus that my friend texted me about, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that is happened twice.

Birds
506. Snowy Owl Bubo scandiacus

Just got back a couple of days ago from a 3-day hike along the Six Foot Track from near Jenolan to Katoomba. I wasn't expecting any new species but I got a couple of well overdue lifers! Also bumped into some Taronga workers who were doing a koala survey for the Blue Mountains Koala Project. I didn't manage to spot any koalas however.

Mammals
22. Short-beaked Echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus)
23. Red-necked Wallaby (Notamacropus rufogriseus banksianus)
24. Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes)

Reptiles
20. Lace Monitor (Varanus varius)
21. Eastern Brown Snake (Pseudonaja textilis)
22. Jacky Dragon (Amphibolurus muricatus)
A second hike in Kosciusko National Park produced only one new species. I have only seen one once before, on Maria Island in January 2020, so it was a great surprise to see two this week!

Birds
192. Flame Robin (Petroica phoenicea)

Just realised I misidentified this one from the hike as a Striated Thornbill!

Birds
193. Brown Thornbill (Acanthiza pusilla)

I now have all 5 species of NSW thornbills found east of the Great Dividing Range on my yearlist!

Last few birds in New Zealand before I fly out this evening, and nicely-enough they are all endemics.

66) Black-fronted Tern Chlidonias albostriatus
67) Weka Gallirallus australis
68) Kea Nestor notabilis
69) South Island Pied Oystercatcher Haematopus finschi
Hmm,mystery. Last few birds are from the South Island, so where are you flying to? Antartica? Anyway, happy travels, and looking forward to some interesting wildlife.

London was cold and seeing a robin singing on an old brick wall outside my hotel, together with snow, reminded me of cheap, but inappropriate for Australia, Christmas cards often on sale at home.

492. Black-headed gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus
493. European robin Erithacus rubecula

Having some free time on Friday, my last full day in London, I took @oflory's advice and visited Rainham Marshes, an RSPB reserve about half an hour by train to the east of London on the north bank of the Thames. I got a few new species, which was nice.

494. Eurasian teal Anas crecca
495. Eurasian widgeon Anas penelope
496. Mallard Anas platyrhynchos
497. Northern pintail Anas acuta
498. Greylag goose Anser anser
499. Common pochard Aythya ferina
500. Northern shoveler Spatula clypeata
501. Eurasian shelduck Tadorna tadorna
502. Grey heron Ardea cinerea
503. Northern lapwing Vanellus vanellus
504. Common snipe Gallinago galinago
505. Common reed bunting Emberiza schoeniclus
506. Marsh tit Poecile palustris

I flew out of Christchurch because my mum and sister live in Reefton which is a town in the mountains, so I was seeing them before I left.
