Zoochat Big Year 2025

As is tradition for me, I did a Big Day on January 1st. I didn't get to do one last year, since I was in Costa Rica - but my incidental non-Big Day birding that day still beat out my total today by a lot. This isn't even my top total in a Wisconsin New Year's Big Day, as the snow storm made visibility difficult. Still always fun to start out the year, though!

A relaxed start to the year - with a walk around the local park in crisp, cold winter weather. I was aiming for c. 30 species of bird and pleasingly hit just that (plus the inevitable grey squirrel). Nothing extraordinary, but a nice few hours. I'm going to try and include Latin names to make things easier for @Chlidonias this year.

With a wedding to plan, I don't expect I will do as well as last year, but do have trips to the UAE, Bermuda and Germany on the books, plus potentially a pre-honeymoon honeymoon to Singapore, if we can fit that in before the end of the year.

That said, if the scops owl at Broadstairs sticks around, that's my Saturday sorted.

What‽ Whereabouts in Sydney are you?
@Osedax In the Campbelltown area. I've heard the bird calling for the last few weeks, usually between 8 & 9pm, and usually once only, and not every night. Last night it called a few times and I was able to work out which direction the calls were coming from and headed off in the dim light and eventually spotted it roosting high in a Eucalypt.

I did not make the time to join last year, but this year I hope to finally keep up with my totals regularly. I made a short stroll in the local forest today, picking up some of the super-common stuff (although a lot of that is still missing). The woods were extremely quiet, but at least I had a nice close sighting of a hawfinch, a species I see quite often but usually flying over or sitting in the top of a tree far away.

thats a pretty respectable list for a Missouri day. One location or more, and where?

The fifty mile-per-hour wind gusts and horizontal rain through much of the day here meant I had the worst start to a birding year, but hopefully I'll be able to get out and about tomorrow:

1. Common woodpigeon, Columba palumbus
2. Eurasian blackbird, Turdus merula
3. Eurasian magpie, Pica pica
4. Red kite, Milvus milvus
5. Black-headed gull, Chroicocephalus ridibundus
6. Redwing, Turdus iliacus
7. Eurasian wren, Troglodytes troglodytes

I did see a couple of smaller passerines, but they were being carried along by a tailwind and were gone before I could get binoculars on them.

As it happens, I didn't get out today. However, I still nearly doubled my bird list just by watching from my bedroom window:

8. Stock dove, Columba oenas
9. European robin, Erithacus rubecula
10. Eurasian blue tit, Cyanistes caeruleus
11. Western jackdaw, Coloeus monedula
12. Common buzzard, Buteo buteo
13. Pied wagtail, Motacilla alba

thats a pretty respectable list for a Missouri day. One location or more, and where?
The two main locations were Smithville Lake and Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge, with some birds seen in my backyard or on the road while driving. The last 9 birds on my list are from Loess Bluffs, and most of the rest were from Smithville Lake.

Today and tomorrow I am spending on the North Wales coast for a good spot of birding. Today has been really quite fruitful with a number of sites visited after arriving at the first site just before half past nine and finishing up at the last site at last light which was perhaps half past four. Some species like the water rail and Cetti's warbler were surprises as I expected I may hear them but to have them outside the hides was lovely. The sparrowhawk was also a surprise as it landed merely a foot from my head.

Onto the birds:

On the way there:
35) Common Buzzard Buteo buteo

Llandulas Beach:
36) Ruddy Turnstone Arenaria interpres
37) Common Scoter (Approx 100+) Melanitta nigra

67) Grey Heron Ardea cinerea

Malltraeth Estuary:
68) Rook Corvus frugilegus
69) Northern Pintail (Virtually all waterfowl here were pintail in fact) Anas acuta

Hopefully some more good birds tomorrow and I wonder if the little egret which has been evading me thus far will appear...

Got my New Year Big Day I traveled to Sandy Hook where I wanted to knock out some Scoters and other seabirds early. Along with that there was a Western Tanager continuing in the Spermaceti Cove area. My first bird of the year was a bunch of Ring-Billed Gulls flying around Natco Lake. I ended up picking up European Starling and American Herring Gull before arriving at Sandy Hook. The first stop was Plum Island where despite having less sparrow activity then I expected, I was able to pick up some of the most common waterfowl and gulls on Sandy Hook along with Grackles and a Great Blue Heron. I then went to Spermaceti Cove where the Tanager had been however he was a no show, although I was able to get several songbirds. I then traveled all the way to the North End of Sandy Hook where I hoped to get some seabirds. Sadly no Loons, Gannets, Razorbill, or Eider although I was able to pick up White-Winged and Black Scoter, along with Lesser Black-Backed Gull. I was also quite frankly flabbergasted to see a small flock of Snow Geese fly over, a bird that wasn’t remotely close to my target list at Sandy Hook, but I’ll take it nonetheless considering they are guaranteed down the shore in May and I won’t be guaranteed another winter trip this year. I then traveled back to Spermaceti Cove where I tried once again for the Tanager and after an hour I caught a short glimpse of the Western Tanager flying by. After that I went home to take a nap after waking up at 5:30 however I did get a few common backyard birds before I crashed.

Hello. I spent my whole day at home, so I only saw two new species.

9. (Thraupis palmarum) - Palm-nut tanager
10. (Psittacara leucophthalmus) - White-eyed parakeet

Did some birding at the Nepean River today. My first lifer of the year was long overdue, and the second was completely unexpected! Also somehow managed two species of kingfisher and got my first mammal of the year.

Mammals
2. House Mouse (Mus musculus)

A bright day yesterday proved tempting, so got the year list started properly in and around Burton Mere; plenty of others with the same idea so less space in the hides than usual. Apologies for using outdated generic names in many cases; it was easiest to use an out of date reference book!

Mammals
1 Grey Squirrel Sciurus carolinensis (1/1 garden sighting)

Birds
1 Little Grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis
2 Little Egret Egretta garzetta

23 Redshank Tringa totanus
24 Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus
25 Herring Gull Larus argentatus
