Zoochat Big Year 2025

A relaxed start to the year - with a walk around the local park in crisp, cold winter weather. I was aiming for c. 30 species of bird and pleasingly hit just that (plus the inevitable grey squirrel). Nothing extraordinary, but a nice few hours. I'm going to try and include Latin names to make things easier for @Chlidonias this year.

With a wedding to plan, I don't expect I will do as well as last year, but do have trips to the UAE, Bermuda and Germany on the books, plus potentially a pre-honeymoon honeymoon to Singapore, if we can fit that in before the end of the year.

That said, if the scops owl at Broadstairs sticks around, that's my Saturday sorted.

Animals don't take a day off just because it's a holiday, but just because I have to work doesn't stop me from trying to beat my number from last year. Given the circumstances, I had a decent handful of birds to start.

BIRDS
3. Rock Pigeon (Columba livia)

After a couple days of only seeing squirrels and the sparrows, I finally saw some rock pigeons in my area today. There are definitely a lot of animals I could've saw but I wasn't as alert as I wanted to be.
Still, animals have been elusive to me, likely due to the cold and strong wind.

I saw one of these soaring over the park, I usually see this in late spring though.
4. Red-Tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)
