ZooChat Challenge Europe 2021

Sometimes, when one door is closed another opens. I had a whole day in Vienna and was considering to re-visit Schönbrunn or visit Haus des Meeres. Than the news for the Bratislava's new pair of Lesser Kudus reached me and I made easy decision. Since is one of the most sensitive to cold weather Ungulates, I was thinking that I am running out of time for this species.

06/11 Bratislava zoo

134.Southern Lesser Kudu (Tragelaphus imberbis australis)

How many places in Europe have indoor access for the Lesser Kudu? Basel, Marwell, Dvur Kralove?
Marwell don't!

Islands in Danger where one has been for ages. I saw it around 1015. There were no signs for it though but I looked for it anyway and it was in the back part of the enclosure behind the second fence

Aha - so she’s still onshow. Excellent to hear!! Someone told me she’d been moved behind the scenes again

Since the California Bighorn Sheeps left Arnhem, only viable option for me to see them was Plzen. The zoo has 9 females and, if there is any chance the species to stay in Europe, they need to import a male! (I am not sure how closely related are the animals in France to the Plzen's group ) Next door Dall's Sheep is doing better and I was happy to see two lambs.

Only just saw this thread for some reason but here is my somewhat meagre tally for now, though trips to Hamerton or London in the autumn could well bolster it:

Montpellier Zoo

1. Grevy's zebra, Equus grevyi
2. Hartmann's mountain zebra, Equus zebra hartmanni
3. Onager, Equus hemionus onager
4. Somali wild ass, Equus africanus somaliensis
5. South American tapir, Tapirus terrestris
6. Southern white rhinoceros, Ceratotherium simum simum
7. Addax, Addax nasomaculatus
8. Addra gazelle, Nanger dama mhorr
9. Arabian oryx, Oryx leucoryx
10. Barbary sheep, Ammotragus lervia.
11. Blesbok, Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi
12. Cape eland, Tragelaphus oryx oryx
13. Eastern bongo, Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci
14. Himalayan blue sheep, Pseudois nayaur
15. Javan banteng, Bos javanicus javanicus
16. Kirk's dik dik, Madoqua kirkii
17. Nile lechwe, Kobus megaceros.
18. Nyala, Tragelaphus angasii
19. Rothschild's giraffe, Giraffe camelopardalis rothschildi
20. Scimitar-horned oryx, Oryx dammah
21. Vicuna, Vicugna vicugna
22. Cameroon sheep, Ovis orientalis f. aries
23. Dromedary camel, Camelus dromedarius

Zoo de Vincennes

24. Chacoan peccary, Catagonus wagneri
25. Greater kudu, Tragelaphus strepsiceros
26. Red lechwe, Kobus leche leche
27. Southern pudu, Pudu puda

Definite room for improvement there, but London could add up to 12 to my total. Still, slightly disappointing but I reckon I'll get to a few more zoos next year for the next challenge :)

Forgot about this - here is the update - quite paltry, but hopefully next year will entail more travel.

London Zoo

28. Burchell's zebra, Equus quagga burchelli
29. Common warthog, Phacochoerus africanus
30. Okapi, Okapia johnstoni
31. Red River hog, Potamochoerus porcus

37. Llama, Lama guanicoe
38. West African pygmy goat, Capra aegragus

Battersea Park Children's Zoo

39. Shetland pony, Equus ferus.

And that's it for the year I'd expect, unless I can catch a glimpse of the ever-elusive red duikers at London!

I was almost denied to do the trip to Munich, but luckily everything went well and I managed to see the last missing species. It's sad that I need to finish this Challenge, but I hope I can participate again. Special gratitude to @ShonenJake13 for arranging it and to everyone who participated and made the game so competitive and exciting!

14/12 Tierpark Hellabrunn
136. Apennine Chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica ornata)
