It is further worth noting that - as mentioned in this thread since my last post - had I visited Plzen a few months later I could have also counted most of those 36 species :p as many have now gone on-display!

Best get on with updating my list.....

Well at least you saw them and managed to get there in the appropriate year :p

I'e had a poor year for passerines. Only 33. But if it had been owls or waterfowl, I would have done well (49 and 47 respectively)

This is my complete list for the year. As I said earlier in the thread, it is surprising how poor the overall results globally were (from the zoos, not the contestants).

I gave up on maintaining this a long time ago, but I had a brief burst of energy this morning so I looked at my notes and did some shoddy calculations. I added about 150 species after Switzerland, but we'll assume I made some mistakes and call it 135, so that would theoretically give me 215. Obviously this doesn't count, but since @CGSwans also seems to have dropped out we can compete for the slackers' cup.
Jurong turned out not to be the gold mine I'd hoped, especially Wings of Asia which gave me nowhere near the 40-50 Zooish suggested (although obviously at that point I'd seen almost 200 species in Europe). Artis was also a disappointment, according to my notes I didn't find a single new species there.
Next year I don't have any big collection based trips planned, so I probably won't compete in whatever challenge comes up.
Happy New Year everyone!

I still have my notes, but admittedly haven't had the energy to sort them out (and lack the time today to do so). Suffice to say I'm many birds shy of Vision's total.

I know it's not 2018 for everyone yet (or here for another half hour) but it seems everyone's submitted their final totals and I probably won't be online for about a month after tonight (I'm going away on a trip!) so I'll post the finale totals now:

1) Vision 270
2) CGSwan 231
3) FunkyGibbon ~215
4) jayjds2 180
5) TeaLovingDave 134
6) Dormitator 117
7) vogelcommando 102
8) LaughingDove 82
9) Zoo Tycooner FR 81
10) MagpieGoose 76
11) GerbenElzinga 67
11) Chlidonias 67
12) ThylacineAlive 63
13) KevinVar 42
14) Zygodactyl 38
15) Marhi 35
16) zoogiraffe 32
17) Fireplume 25
18) DragonDust101 12
19) Dylan 5
20) Fresco3 2
21) pipaluk 1

Congratulations to Vision for winning this year and thank you to everyone who participated in this year's challenge and I hope to see you all in the 2018 ZooChat Challenge!

I must wonder how different my total would have been had I managed to do my trips to DWA, San Diego, Walsrode, Berlin. and Plzen this year as originally planned :p

You missed a couple of my posts, thylo ;)

Additions from Welsh Mountain Zoo:

83) Jungle Myna (Acridotheres fuscus)
84) Brahminy Starling (Sturnia pagodarum)
85) Black-breasted Thrush (Turdus dissimilis)
86) Village Weaver (Ploceus cucullatus)
87) Golden-breasted Bunting (Emberiza flaviventris)

And can anyone identify this: ID Please | ZooChat I was able to identify most unsigned birds at the zoo (of which there were many) but I'm not sure on this one.

Also, has anyone else noticed the really stupid error on my part in my previous post (the quoted one)? :p

Sewerby Zoo:

88) Star Finch (Neochmia ruficauda)
89) African Silverbill (Euodice cantans)
90) Scaly-breasted Munia (Lonchura punctulata)

Also, it doesn't change the order but I don't think I ever got around to adding theses species that Warsaw Zoo obtained/put on show mid-year, so for completeness:

91) Yellow-fronted Canary (Serinus mozambicus)
92) Red-collared Widowbird (Euplectes ardens)
93) Cuban Grassquit (Phonipara canora)
