Wait has Gordon's Wildcat been split or not under the new taxonomy? The scientific names he gives above list two ssp of Felis silvestris.

~Thylo

It has, and we have been counting it as Felis lybica gordoni already :) I think he remembered we were counting it as distinct but not the new scientific name, so went with the older name.

I summarised the major cat taxonomy decisions pertinent to this thread here.

Ah yes I remember now. Sorry the Felis splits confuse me :p

Sorry for writing such a long list, as I saw this challenge for the first time last friday... ;)

2 very big misses at Taman Safari Bogor because both were off exhibit and no access was granted (wouldn't have counted anyways for this challenge I suppose)

1. bay cat (Catopuma badia) (which has since passed away, but supposedly was sometimes on exhibit)
2. Sunda clouded leopard (Neofelis diardi) (were usually exhibited, but were off exhibit for breeding purposes)

And off the top of my head I noticed I don't have three of the more common species yet- meerkat, red panda or asian small clawed otter. I may very well have ran past them, however I wasn't aware of this challenge yet and was mostly focusing on mammal lifers. Expect them added soon haha.

My life list is at 192. It'll be interesting to see how many of my total I'll see in just this year.

Perth has red panda and Asian small clawed otter (I'm not sure about meerkat), but like you I didn't see these species because I was focusing on numbat, dibbler and co.

I'm pretty sure Ueno have all three.

Yesterday at the " Burger's Zoo Meet-up " I was able to see 5 new species for the Challenge :

40) Ringed seal - Pusa hispida ( see Ringed seal | ZooChat )
41) Bobcat - Lynx rufus
42) Golden jackal - Canis aureus ( see Adult Golden jackal | ZooChat )
43) Ringtail - Basiariscus astrutus ( see Ringtail | ZooChat )
44) Sun bear - Helrectos malayanus ( see Sun bear | ZooChat )

Made a misstake in counting ( I've number 40 2 times so I'm actualy now at 45 species. Last weekend I however visited Ouwehand and could add 3 more species to the list :
46 ) Brown bear - Ursus arctos ( see Brown bear | ZooChat )
47 ) Giant panda - Ailuropoda melanoleuca ( see Giant panda | ZooChat )
48 ) Clouded leopard - Neofelis nebulosa

I'm pretty sure Ueno have all three.

I'm sure a few of the places I went had all three, I merely wasn't looking for them. Don't think I'll have a problem finding any of the 3 over the next few months haha.

Oh and I forgot one:

79. Common racoon (Procyon lotor) - Moscow Zoo

Getting a little close to my lead there...sadly can’t do anything to get further ahead for the next couple of weeks.

But September.....

Haha got any big trips planned?? This Sunday I'll be going to Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Smithsonian National Zoo. Then I got 2 weeks in September to Europe/Dubai. And theres a lot of easy ones still waiting for my list.

Can you repost your full list? I had looked for it late last night but couldn't find it.

And what's your life list at- both for carnivores and total mammals (zoo and/or wild)?
