Do people have any sense of what a competitive total will look like this year? Frankly I don't at all.

I'd be surprised if anyone breaks 100, unless they're so dedicated they go to zoos around the globe with particularly strong amphibian collections. So unless anyone wants to hit Paignton, Detroit, Chemnitz, Plzen, Manchester Museum, Berlin and any other notable amphibian collections then it won't be too high.

I've personally visited 1 collection so far, with another due in the next 2 weeks or so. My current total is zero, I may be on 3 after a trip to Dudley!

So basically, not high at all! :p

I'm not expecting high totals this year. I'm hoping that the fact that most zoos keep the same selection of amphibians (obviously not the case in your part of the world!) makes for a bit more of a competition, particularly between European and American competitors. Every species counts!

Well, as I noted at the start of this thread I broke 100 by a significant margin in 2018 without even trying to get a high amphibian total - 143 species all told. Granted I visited Chemnitz, but even without this collection my total would have still been c.110.

So what you're saying is me and Thylo are way out with our estimates? :p

Well, my visit to both San Diego Zoo facilities at the year's start will probably be the only large update for this year.

The San Diegos are actually surprisingly poor for amphibians for their large size and considering the zoo's immense reptile collection. I would be very surprised if there weren't other large updates.

I think I'm done for a while... I said that before I went to St. Louis but as uni starts again in a few days and I'm busy for them I probably won't be going elsewhere. So, depending on what your Japan trip has in store, you've got plenty of time to catch up.
