ZooChat Challenge Global 2020

So, roughly 65-70 species in Australia, plus an extra ten or so in Europe, maybe only a couple of extra ones from the USA (Common Opossum and Yapok come to mind immediately), and another three or four probably if one visited Indonesia / Philippines / PNG. It doesn't seem like the zoos in Central and South America keep the local species much but I'll throw in a handful (say five species).

Grand total if a person wanted to do an actual Global Marsupial Zoochat Challenge, roughly 90 species.


I'm tempted to make a couple of quick trips to Perth, Melbourne, and Gold Coast... :p

I do not believe there are any Yapok still on-exhibit in American atm unfortunately.

Hmm I didn't think about that. I don't see why not considering the max. total anyone in both regions can get is three.

So yes, I will let monotremes count as well unless anyone can point out any issues with this.

I'll have to think on this. On one hand I do feel it's better if anyone traveling in/out of Australia only qualify for the global title that way those who aren't fortunate enough to have big travel plans this year can still have a shot at winning something, but at the same time this runs the risk of causing somebody who only visited one or two zoos in Australia but was winning in the rest of the world to now lose out on everything.

What does everyone else think about this?

You know, us Antipodeans have been very understanding as we watch global challenge after global challenge pass us by without any realistic chance of winning. Can't we just have this one thing? :)

There are several other cuscus and opossum species (especially woolly) floating around in private - some could go on exhibit.

To be clear, you already do have a chance of winning the whole thing. People who remain within their region are still eligible to be crowned the overall global winner (tbh I'm assuming an Antipodean as it were will be the global winner regardless), the current rules only state that someone who travels between the regions can't be crowned the winner within those regions. So basically, everyone participating is eligible for the global crown regardless of region, it's just the regional winners have to have remained within their region.

But again, if people would like me to change that I can :)

I like FunkyGibbon's suggestion that you should be able to maintain separate lists and compete for either crown.

(I might be biased, though).

My suggestion would be to have winners for Global, Australasia, and "Other" - regardless of how many different countries a person visited, they could easily still break their totals into the three categories (sort of like how some of the challenges have been able to be broken down into mammals, birds, reptiles, etc). So in FunkyGibbon's scenario he could still win in the "Other" category even if he had visited Australia. If he played his cards right, he could win all three categories.
