ZooChat Challenge Global 2022

I'm quite jealous of the fox and pouched rat, having missed both of those myself in 2018.

~Thylo
I have seen the both species few times, but only on the early morning. The pouched rat I have seen in Vienna, as well. I believe, if you want to take most of Plzen you need to be there 8:00 sharp.
The Jackal, for example I have seen only ones in four visits.

Funny, the jackal I had no issues seeing on my one and only visit! Guess I got lucky in that regard.

04.07.2022 Plzen zoo

If the small mammals are in play, Plzen is the first choice and the only "disappointing" part is the fact, that we can count just the species on show.
I have been there in December and was familiar with the current collection, but there are significant amount of changes since than. The new Lion outdoor exhibit and the new Flamingo Aviary (not opened yet) worth mentioning.

Roughly how much longer would the list be if off-show species could be counted? I take it that it is relatively easy to get off-show access to Plzen, from what I've heard. Is this true?

Maybe 50% longer? And yes it is fairly easy to get off show access. The striking thing about the place in my opinion is that their bird collection, while not talked about much, is arguably better than their (admittedly one of a kind) mammal collection…

I am not paying proper attention to it (even when I am spending at the Zoo 10 hours), but the bird collection, is indeed very diverse. Plzen improves the husbandry and the conditions every year and spread the animals all over the zoo, which make it more difficult to locate certain species. If you are into Mammals, Birds and Ectotherms, you need at least two long days to see everything.

280. Canadian beaver/ Castor canadensis
281. Javan ferret-badger/ Melogale orientalis

Wildlife Habitat - 1/7/2022
61. Northern bettong - Bettongia tropica
62. Lumholtz’s tree kangaroo - Dendrolagus lumholtzi
63. Smooth knob-tailed gecko - Nephrurus levis
64. Northern nail-tail wallaby - Onychogalea unguifera

No striped possums in Port Douglas anymore, alas.

Sydney Aquarium/Wild Life Sydney - 6/7/2022
65. Grey nurse shark - Carcharias taurus
66.Ornate wobbegong - Orectolobus ornatus
67. Sugar glider - Petaurus breviceps
68. Brown-banded bamboo shark - Chiloscyllium punctatum
69. Tawny nurse shark - Nebrius ferrugineus

I almost certainly saw crested horn sharks as well, but can’t tell them and Port Jacksons apart so am not claiming it. There are three wobbegong species in the same tank, but I’m reasonably confident the one I saw was an ornate wobbegong, and since I only saw one feel justified in claiming it.

Taronga Zoo - 7/7/2022
70. Long-beaked echidna - Zaglossus bartoni
71. Golden-tailed gecko - Strophurus taenicauda
72. Giant cave gecko - Pseudothecadactylus cavaticus
73. Fishing cat - Prionailurus viverrinus
74. Brush-tailed rock-wallaby - Petrogale penicillata

Number 70 is rather meaningful - in nearly 25 years of visiting Taronga on most visits to Sydney, this is the first time I’ve ever seen it. Given JR’s age, there’s a fair chance it’ll be the only time too. We spent some quality time - JR ignoring me entirely while I watched him eat afternoon tea in his burrow.

This is the last update from my current trip to North Qld and Sydney. It was to have been to Southeast Qld as well, but plans to visit Currumbin, David Fleay Wildlife Park and Wildlife HQ were scuppered by my partner catching COVID. Thankfully she recovered quickly and we were still able to enjoy a chunk of our planned holiday. :)

Oh yeah, saw two new (for the year) owl species that I was convinced were already on my list but aren't...

Hoo Zoo (28/06) -

64. Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus)
65. Eurasian Eagle-owl (Bubo bubo)

That is definitely my final total for Hoo! ;)

I think you're safe, losing 3 months of zoo-visiting (One [repeat] trip to Sea Life doesn't count!) has definitely put me on the back foot.
This is part one of yesterdays total, will be back with the Hamerton update later. Spoiler alert- no possums of either species or any taxa! Johnson's have opened their new tropical house extension though so got myself a couple of new crocodilians for the year! :D

Johnson's Of Old Hurst (06/07) -

66. Cuban Crocodile (Crocodylus rhombifer)
67. West African Dwarf Crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis)
68. Siamese Crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis)
69. Broad-snouted Caiman (Caiman latirostris)

And a species I've seen several times (most recently at Hoo) but forgot it counted -

70. Ring-tailed Coati (Nasua nasua)

I can only like a post once, so you can count this quote as a second like.

Is the echidna still in an outside enclosure currently?

It’s in one of the enclosures in the Tasmanian devil house. It has access to outdoors but was being fed in its burrow, so I suspect it doesn’t leave often.

85) Rusty Spotted Cat Prionailurus Rubiginosus
86) Ratel Mellivora Capensis
87) Dusky Pademelon Thylogale Brunii
