If specific dates are needed I can look back and add them. Since I've visited many zoos without posting, I'll list by challenge and which zoo I saw each animal but will return to typical format after this posting.

In the Hall of Animals in the dark section along with with the straw-colored fruit bats and the moholi bushbaby exhibits near the entry doors that lead to the farm.

The habitat directly next to the doors? Odd, that held Black-Footed Cat on my visit in October.

@ThylacineAlive It has come to my attention that Extinct Roach has not been formally classified by IUCN as EW, although it is completely extinct in the wild and does survive only in captivity.

So the species technically does not qualify for Second Chance Red List Challenge, although if IUCN did asses the species they would classify it as such.

So can I count it, or do I need to find a new extinct in the wild species that actually is "Extinct in the Wild"?

In the case of this cockroach specifically I will allow it to count, as it's known to be extinct in the wild even if not classified by the IUCN yet.

This is a special exception, though, and does not apply to just any species whose endangered status may be different to what the IUCN officially lists them as.

Just fyi Mannophryne trinitatis is not in Dendrobatidae, but rather in the sister family Aromobatidae! Otherwise all good so far!

Question: Does this rule only count towards Island Hoppers, or to the entirety of the challenge? For example, for Bonafide Rarity
Hunter, would the Santiago Giant Tortoises at Toledo, the only holder of C. darwini, count, or would they be disqualified due to other zoos holding different Galapagos tortoises?
Last I was aware SDZ also held a darwini?

I'm not sure if SDZ has a confirmed darwini but they may. The Galaps are certainly confusing...

But regardless, yes, I am counting the whole complex as one entry for all challenges.

Hi friends, I am hoping to be of the adding of my points to the full tally. I understand may be some errors but please bear with me (Get it? Like Bears!), it has been tough for me recently and this is how I like to have fun. If there is an issue please do not be mad at me and simply remind me, I am only human.

Alas I am going to show my completed and tallying ones only. Thank you for understanding.

1) Are you sure it's a Mexican prehensile-tailed porcupine you saw at Animal Adventures?
2) You're still listing "Blue Poison Dart Frog" on your list, this is not a valid species.
3) What do you mean by "side-necked turtle"?

@ThylacineAlive Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere in the thread, but I'm a bit confused by this one. Is it at least two zoos, to prevent people from doing it all at one, is it a maximum of two zoos, or is it exactly two zoos?

Every species needs to be seen twice between different zoos. They don't all need to be seen at the same two zoos.

I hadn't even considered it meant that they all need to be seen twice (i.e. each species needs to be seen at two different zoos).

This is correct.

I have a question about some of the challenges. Embrace the ABC's, Asian Songbird Challenge, Thylo's Bonus Challenge, and Bona Fide Rarity Hunter both say "at least" in their directions (e.g. "see at least one predator-prey exhibit set-up", "see all 18 of the common zoo animals in at least two different zoos"). Does this mean those challenes are technically open-ended in a way? I am permitted to post, say, gorilla sightings at three zoos or more two Hagenbeck-style predator-prey exhibits?

See above but you do not need to see more than one predator-prey exhibit.

Completed: 0/29
In Progress: 18/26

I am hesitant to accept the glassfish entry since this will be a species imported from Australia and therefore likely to be kept within Australia. How did you determine this animal isn't kept within Australia? Fish are fairly difficult to keep track of.

Sorry for the late entry to the challenge. I was busy with travels and now work. I visited a number of facilities from January 18-27 during a road trip. If specific dates are needed I can look back and add them. Since I've visited many zoos without posting, I'll list by challenge and which zoo I saw each animal but will return to typical format after this posting.

One-Zoo Wonder - ???
@ThylacineAlive Does Pinni-party count as a trial by itself, or must all the 2018 challenges be completed in a single zoo for this to count?

If that is not the case, I will use that trial to complete One-Zoo Wonder.

NOT YET WORKED ON

2016 (Part III): Sea Shepherds - 0/2

2017 (Part I): Check Your Feeders - 0/4

2022: Don't Turn On the Lights - 0/10

Thylo's Bonus Challenge - 0/1

EDIT: I remember I saw Mantella at Jacksonville so I did see another island endemic if Madagascar counts.

Pinni-Party counts as its own separate challenge

As long as you know what mantella species it was, it counts.

@ThylacineAlive: I have a question about the rules I thought of when planning what zoos to visit this year. For "Fly the Coop", do we need to be able to prove the guineafowl seen is not domesticated, or can a domesticated guineafowl count? I know domesticated species often don't count for the challenges, but wanted to make sure that's still true in this instance.

My initial plans for a very zoo-heavy international travel year have changed, so I'm not entirely sure how much further I'm going to progress from this point tbh. I don't have many other zoo trips planned for this year but I'm sure I'll hack away at a few more categories.

@ThylacineAlive: I have a question about the rules I thought of when planning what zoos to visit this year. I know domesticated species often don't count for the challenges, but wanted to make sure that's still true in this instance.

Helmeted Guineafowl aren't admissible, the challenge calls for either Vulturine or Crested.

In the case of this cockroach specifically I will allow it to count, as it's known to be extinct in the wild even if not classified by the IUCN yet.

This is a special exception, though, and does not apply to just any species whose endangered status may be different to what the IUCN officially lists them as.
Except there doesn't seem to be any real evidence that the cockroach actually is extinct in the wild.

See my post here: What Extinct in the Wild Species Have You Seen?

See my post here: What Extinct in the Wild Species Have You Seen?

That's a fair note then! I'm only familiar with the species via European zoo personnel and private keepers I'm acquainted with and I simply took their word for it. Sounds like it might be similar to the recent "Mountain Anoa is extinct in the wild" story where there isn't any science backing the claim...

@birdsandbats I'll ask around a little bit to see if there's any more information on the species but for now let's not count the species. Sorry!

@ThylacineAlive Thank you for that information. I will use Pinni-party to complete the One-Zoo wonder challenge.

A few mistakes I made on my list that need fixing:

1. Besides Golden Mantella, I also saw Puerto Rican Crested Toad at Jacksonville Zoo, and totally forgot Puerto Rico counts as an island. That will add one more to my Island Hopper list.

2. On the Hot-blooded challenge I accidentally put Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake twice by the venomous snake section. I meant to put Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake, also seen at Jacksonville Zoo. This is the correct list:

2. Red Spitting Cobra - Zoo Atlanta
3. Southern Copperhead - Zoo Atlanta

3. I see from other posters that any specific enclosure with dim lighting can count towards the nocturnal challenge. If that's correct, can I count the two bat exhibits at Jacksonville Zoo? My updated list would be:

1. Seba's Leafnose Bat - Jacksonville Zoo
2. Common Vampire Bat - Jacksonville Zoo

As I have already stated in the North American Challenge thread, unfortunately for this challenge/fortunately for the population, since my visit to the Dallas Zoo last month, the Dallas Zoo has sent a group of their Sakishima grass lizards to the Little Rock Zoo. They are currently still in quarantine and thus are not yet on exhibit; however, the exhibit is signed and ready for them to go on display soon. After which, Dallas will no longer be the only collection in North America with this species on display.

2 months and only 2 zoo visits in, it is time for me to throw my (very real) hat into the (metaphoric) ring!

My initial plans for a very zoo-heavy international travel year have changed, so I'm not entirely sure how much further I'm going to progress from this point tbh. I don't have many other zoo trips planned for this year but I'm sure I'll hack away at a few more categories.

~Thylo

Got a little ahead of myself it seems! Turns out Jacksonville also keeps Philippine Pitviper so I will be swapping that species out for Brongersma's Pitviper in Bona Fide Rarity Hunter!

~Thylo

I put all of these in my spreadsheet at the same time, so it’s easier for me to go through the challenges once and list the facility after each species. I’ll use abbreviations.

Neither of these are island endemics.

Chlidonias is correct!

~Thylo

One very minor correction I'll make now because it could be a few weeks before my next zoo visit. I listed long-nosed potoroo for my Healesville trip on Sunday, but that was a mistake - the correct species is long-footed potoroo (which would actually be my second qualifier for the bona fide rarity bonus challenge, I think).

This correction will be reflected in future posts.

It's Sunday, you know what that means!

Buffalo Zoo:
Hot Blooded for Cold Blood (16/24 plus 17 chelonians):
17. Gopher Tortoise- Gopherus polyphemus

Challenges completed remains 4/29. Looking forward, there's very little left I'm waiting on at Buffalo. A few Asian box turtle species continue to elude me (if they're even still on exhibit), but other than that I just need to wait for the weather to warm up enough for giraffes, one-horned rhinos, and lemurs!
Return visit to Rosamond Gifford Zoo yielded me a few more species (including a few birds I was surprised to see):
Let That Ruminate (3/11 plus 8 bovids):
3. Red River Hog- Potamochoerus porcus

Thylo's Top 20 (6/8):
5. Venezuelan Troupial- Icterus icterus
6. Taveta Golden Weaver- Ploceus castaneiceps (turns out they do still have two weavers after all!)

Don't You Forget About Me (5/13):
5. Hoffmann's Two-toed Sloth- Choelopus hoffmanni

Don't Turn On The Lights (9/10):
8. Hoffmann's Two-toed Sloth- Choelopus hoffmanni
9. Yellow Banded Pipefish- Dunckerocamphis pessuliferus
(Now I just need one of Rosamond Gifford's three frequent no-shows to appear on my next trip, the armadillo which I've seen once, or the kiwi/tamandua which I've never seen).

Embrace the ABC's (8/36):
Tiger: Rosamond Gifford (second tiger)

Challenges completed remains 4/29.
