ZooChat Challenge Global 2023 - 10th Anniversary Special!

Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institute of Oceanography (La Jolla, CA) -- 06 March 2023:

I’m Hot Blooded (For Cold Blood) (24/24):
  1. Turtles/Tortoises (64/∞):
    1. Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta)
TOTAL:
Completed: 18/29
In-Progress: 7/8

Nice! You seem to be a few miles away of completing almost all the Challenges :)

@ThylacineAlive the challenge doesn’t end immediately if somebody completes all 29 challenges, right? We can all keep going until the end of the year and post our totals here, right?
The answer to that question is in the first post of the thread:
There is one major difference to how this challenge will operate in comparison to the 2022 NA challenge, that being that not all of the challenges are realistically completable. Some challenges, in fact, are entirely or in-part open-ended. I added this aspect intentionally, to avoid there ever being a hypothetical win due to someone completing all the challenges in full. I feel this is the best way to keep the game moving and to avoid unnecessary and/or unfriendly competitiveness due to there legitimately being a way to win the whole game before the end of the year. This is no knock on @Coelacanth18 for the record, just an amendment based on my observations of how that game unfolded. The open-ended portions of challenges will be italicized.

Got a few visits under my belt, so might as well update this thread with my opening salvo:

Challenges Complete: 6

Incidentally, when reading through this thread to see how everyone else has been doing thus far, I've noticed that both @amur leopard and @Kalaw have listed invertebrate species for the Red List challenge; unless I missed a chance in the rules, these do not count per the following:

Very nice list from Wroclaw. The Hartebeest was most likely indoor, but what about the Cretan goats ?

The goats were onshow, but I didn't count them (yet) because I wasn't sure if @ThylacineAlive would be counting them as a feral or not. The same goes for European Mouflon.

Can this be clarified? It says 4 vertebrate species for the Threatened categories but just 'any 2 species' for the Red List challenge, so does that include inverts or not? If not I believe a fair few people have changes to be made...

Wellington Zoo - third visit - 11 March (still the only zoo I have visited this year).

On this visit I managed to see the Parma Wallaby, and the kiwi house has reopened after a fairly long-term closure so I got to add North Island Brown Kiwi and Duvaucel's Gecko to various categories.

I have started one more Challenge (Don't Turn On The Lights), to make 15 Challenges started; and added extra species into four in-progress Challenges: Usborne's Scavenger Hunt Challenge (kiwi), Island Hoppers Challenge (kiwi and gecko), Native Species Challenge (gecko), and Let's Give This Another Go (wallaby).

Thylo's Bonus Challenge

Henry Vilas is runnin' a little thin. All they have left that's relevant for this challenge are the capybaras, the grizzlies, and a few turtles (unless any new species join their public collection this year). And even then, those wouldn't complete anything. However, that's all about to change... see you guys in a few weeks...
Well, would you look at the time? It's a few weeks o'clock! Zochatters, behold my master plan! I wanted to do something special for my spring break this year, so at the beginning of the year, I asked my dear friend @ifesbob if we could do a road trip to Chicago, and after months of planning, it's finally happening! Yesterday was the big drive to Illinois, and today we went to the Lincoln Park Zoo! Now, there will definitely be some differences between my list and @ifesbob's list. I admittedly forgot that some species counted, and forgot to look for them. Nevertheless, here's what I saw today!

So far, this plan has been going splendidly! I'm going to the Field Museum tomorrow, so no new stuff then, but I've got 4 more zoological facilities to visit after that!

Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institute of Oceanography (La Jolla, CA) -- 06 March 2023:

I’m Hot Blooded (For Cold Blood) (24/24):
  1. Turtles/Tortoises (64/∞):
    1. Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta)
TOTAL:
Completed: 18/29
In-Progress: 7/8

Nice! You seem to be a few miles away of completing almost all the Challenges :)
I should be within just a few hours drive of completing all of the challenges except "The Unbearable Challenge"! :) Going into the year, I figured that would be the one challenge I would likely not complete just due to the shortage of/location of Asiatic black bears and giant pandas in North America.

It was a beautiful day in Escondido today! The bovids showed out; however, unfortunately, the sand cats were off-exhibit for maintenance and the park has gone out of Bennett's wallabies or I would have ticked off a couple more boxes and a couple more challenges!

San Diego Zoo Safari Park (Escondido, CA) -- 13 March 2023:
Let That Ruminate (11/11):

  1. Bovidae (45/∞):

    2. East African oryx (Oryx beisa)
    3. Gemsbok (Oryx gazella)
    4. Impala (Aepyceros melampus)
    5. Kob (Kobus kob)
    6. Nile lechwe (Kobus megaceros)
    7. Nubian ibex (Capra nubiana)
    8. Red-fronted gazelle (Eudorcas rufifrons)
    9. Slender-horned gazelle (Gazella leptoceros)
    10. Soemmerring’s gazelle (Nanger soemmerringii)
    11. Thomson’s gazelle (Eudorcas thomsonii)
    12. Urial (Ovis vignei)
    13. Waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus)

Certainly impressive to have finished so many this early! Technically, one long weekend would be enough to achieve both those species in Virginia and National Zoos, if you have the ability to travel and/or are determined to finish all of the challenges.

It's interesting how different regions change what we consider the most difficult challenges/species to achieve. For me, the species I consider the limiting factor in "Unbearable Challenge" is the Sun Bear, a species I've never seen before, and Asiatic Black Bear is a species that I'm more likely than not to see before the year's out.

I keep trying to get him to come visit me :P Asiatic is definitely much easier in our area, I see them several times a year, vs now just one place with sun bear. It was my last species for the NA challenge last year, too.

Knock it off.
Please understand that what I said was not an accusatory claim, but rather one of a friendly nature. I understand that what Kudu saw on his excursion across the country is completely valid, and I am not one to dispute that! It is simply after all friendly banter in a friendly competition. Please understand that I am only being friendly about a friendly competition, no more, no less!

Hi friends, I am hoping to be of the adding of my points to the full tally. I understand may be some errors but please bear with me (Get it? Like Bears!), it has been tough for me recently and this is how I like to have fun. If there is an issue please do not be mad at me and simply remind me, I am only human.

Alas I am going to show my completed and tallying ones only. Thank you for understanding.
