ZooChat Challenge Global 2023 - 10th Anniversary Special!

  • As many members of the family Bovidae as you can see!

Just as clarification, does this part of the challenge have the same rules as the Europe Challenge a few years back (i.e. can either see domestic form or wild form, not both, for all except domestic cattle and yak)?

Bona Fide Rarity Hunter (2/3)
Puerto Rican Parrot (Amazona vittata)
If I am not mistaken, Lincoln Park Zoo is the only zoo outside of Puerto Rico to keep these parrots, so does this count as a global rarity? @ThylacineAlive

Good question. I believe there is technically a breeding center for this species in Puerto Rico that is sometimes open to the public. But while geographically part of North America, for the sake of the bird challenges I discounted the Caribbean due to the high overlap of otherwise South American birds in the Lesser Antilles. I'll think on it, but ultimately I think you'll be good to keep it.

As for your turtles, we will be following IUCN and keeping Three-Toed Box Turtle synonymized with Eastern Box Turtle.

You know, whenever I think about clearing a bunch of challenges, I always hear the sound of a bunch of bowling pins getting knocked down. Anyways, Brookfield. Got there around 10:00, left at around 4:30. While there were some unfortunate misses (anteater, meerkats, gorillas), I can confidently say that this was my best trip to Brookfield yet!

Haven't Started Yet (1/29)
Thylo's Bonus Challenge

Boy, do I have a story to tell about Bona Fide Rarity Hunter! @ifesbob and I missed the pangolin on our first go through Habitat Africa: the Forest. We decided to catch it on the way out, but we didn't see it there, either. We were about to give up... then the bucket in the habitat breathed. The pangolin was asleep in the bucket, but we couldn't see them. What did we do? The only sensible thing anyone would do: stare at a bucket of paper shavings in the dark for 45 minutes until the pangolin woke up, of course! We waited until the buildings were about to close, and then... the pangolin woke up! They even stuck out their tongue!
Anyways, I'm exhausted. I've got to get up early tomorrow for the ride back to Madison...
...but not without two more zoo visits on the way! Mwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!!!
Finally back in Wisconsin! I was expecting these last two visits to be horribly rushed messes, but they went surprisingly smoothly! First on the docket is Racine, which was so overwhelmingly mid that I completed it in less than an hour (also, how the herpestidae did I miss the meerkats at all 3 zoos that had them on this trip?!?!??!)

Certified "shamone" moment! And with that, I can peacefully stagnate until July. Seriously, Henry Vilas is useless for this challenge now. The only thing they have that matters for this challenge that I didn't see this past week are their Ornate Box Turtles. I know I'm not going to win, but I've still got plans to increase my score! Just gotta keep those grades up if I want to make them happen...

Went to Zoo Miami, first zoo visit in nearly two months.

I actually do have some questions regarding certain animals I saw:

1. I would like to use Green Jay for the Bird Feeder challenge. However, the species seems to be split by some authorities. The Green Jays in Miami are signed as Cyanocorax yncas but the map distribution on the sign matches Cyanocorax luxuosus plus they're never called Inca Jays anywhere. How are you treating this complex?

2. There is a bat exhibit thats outdoors, but the enclosure is set up in a way that its completely dark so much so that its extremely hard to tell which of the three species inside you're looking at. I was wondering if this would count as a nocturnal exhibit (the only bat I could confirm I saw was Seba's Bat which I already used in the challenge, and I won't be counting the other species for the challenge).

Came back to this thread for a quick update and noticed a lot of people are using spoilers now... not sure if this is because of my suggestion:

A suggestion for everyone based on how North America went last year: the
Spoiler
function is very useful when everyone is constantly re-posting these very long lists; it helped me by keeping the pages from getting insanely long. Up to @ThylacineAlive whether they think that helps or hurts things, but it's food for thought.

but I do wonder if people misunderstood what I meant. What I meant was using *one* spoiler for *all* of the updates in a post, not an individual spoiler for each category. It doesn't really make posts shorter or pages more navigable to use 20 spoilers of one species each... and also it's a lot more work :p again, not my game and nobody has to use them at all - but I thought I'd clarify in case people didn't understand what I was suggesting initially.

And now my update - quite small, since my third visit of the year was to an aquarium with only fish and marine invertebrates:

Cabrillo Marine Aquarium - Mar 17

Just realized I forgot to mark that challenge as complete. I completed it with cassowary on March 14th at the San Antonio Zoo but didn't put it in my running list of completed challenges.

I have a couple logistical questions. (1) How far back are we allowed to go in counting visits? I mean obviously within 2023, but could I, for example, go through species from very early in the year? and (2) I know the facilities have to be open to the public, but I'm still a bit confused on what facilities count. Do rescues/sanctuaries/nature centers/etc. count? Is there a critical mass of animals needed to count? Obviously a fish tank in a hotel probably wouldn't count, but I'm still a little bit confused. Specifically, I'm asking because early in the year I visited a wildlife rescue/sanctuary when I was in Costa Rica and I want to know if I can count those. I also think it could be useful for other people to know.

1. 2023. It's only March, you're fine going back to Jan 1st. Time period only becomes an issue when it's late in the year and someone makes their first post that puts them at/near the top of the leaderboard.
2. All of those count, as long as they are open to the public and have regular visiting hours. Places with very limited openings (like a couple weekends a year), places that are tour only, stores, things like that don't count.
