ZooChat Challenge Global 2023 - 10th Anniversary Special!

It could be because there is a colony on The island of Tierra Del Fuego (AKA The 'grand' Island of Tierra Del Fuego)

That's not what I'm asking. In my using of the website, I've always seen islands listed separately from mainlands. As a quick example, the Island Fox is described as being from the Channel Islands, with each island specifically mentioned, vs saying southwest California or southwest USA.

That would be inconsistent then, as a search on sites like iNat or eBird only seem to have birds on the mainland (In the vicinity of Punta Arenas) sparingly, as visitors/vagrants, and every other resource only mentions the archipelago as breeding grounds

Just gonna wait for Thylo's judgement on the matter of king penguins. If they are allowed that's another species I gotta add and would complete the bird portion of Island Hoppers.

Not saying you’re wrong about the King penguins but there’s a good chance that’s because the fox is only found on those islands, so saying anything other than the islands would be misleading. Perhaps because Tierra del Fuego is so large and so close to the mainland (2km at narrowest point) it made sense just to put Southern Chile for ease of understanding.

Either way it’s not that big a deal :).

I just used that one as an example because it's the first thing that popped in my head :)

Normally it's a good idea to note where each species was seen in a list such as this. I'm not suggesting that your list is inaccurate or that you are intentionally being misleading, but it helps everyone else reading these lists if zoo names are included, and it helps maintain a level of accountability with reporting as well.

[
Where ever this was seen, it was a North Island Brown Kiwi.

I thought that was probably the case, but the zoo labels it as A.australis and I’m not equipped to tell the difference. Either way, it counts as completing the challenge.

Understand, but it’s far too much work to notate for every species. If you have any queries I’m happy to confirm where given species were seen.

Yeah, A. australis is the pre-split name which is still used (probably by most zoos). There are no South Island Browns kept in zoos. But now you can also use it for that other challenge requiring a North Island Brown Kiwi.

I came back from a work trip in Baltimore and also ended up visiting Colonial Williamsburg and the Virginia Zoo afterwards. Also stopped at other zoos and some wildlife centers along the way. Unfortunately could not make it to Smithsonian National Zoo to see the new bird house, though. List of visited facilities used in this challenge:

Upper Schuylkill Valley Park = USVP
Plumpton Park Zoo - PPZ
Maryland Zoo = MZ
National Aquarium = NA
Marshy Point Nature Center - MPNC
Virginia Zoo = VZ

I will say, National Aquarium definitely helped with the turtle challenge :)
