So, hi everyone At this point there's an entire team running this challenge, as I've stepped in to help the very busy @ThylacineAlive and @ZooBinh. I've gone through and put all of the entries so far into the spreadsheets we made to keep track of everyone here.
First, GENERAL. None of these are required, except for the first, but they greatly help me. It might take you a few minutes longer, but it saves me at least a few more minutes, and I have 33+ people to keep track of compared to your one
- @aardvark250 Jury is still out on if Nicobar pigeon counts for Islands, just fyi.
- @birdsandbats You are at 16 turtles, not 15. You had golden coin turtle elsewhere on your list but didn’t put it under turtles. For Rio, what macaws did you see at Lake Superior? You initially posted that you saw blue and yellow, and green winged. A bit later you said you’d forgotten about the challenge (you hadn’t) and said you saw blue and yellow, and red and green at Lake Superior. Which is it?
- @CGSwans You need to include where you saw each species. A general list at the top is not okay. I worked out your species up until April 2nd (ZooChat Challenge Global 2023 - 10th Anniversary Special!), since it was one facility per post, but after that you did multiple facilities in one post. Also, please delete previous answers from your posts, or at least don’t include challenges that you don’t have additions to for that post.
- @endogenylove If you list the location at the top of the post, you don’t need to also list it for each animal. That’s just for if you visited multiple facilities for that post.
- @ifesbob You have yellow-spotted Amazon river turtle twice, at Lincoln Park and Smithsonian.
- @Kalaw You need to list the location you saw each species at. You can do this either by doing a list per each visit, or combining them and putting a note next to each entry. I need you to repost your second and third posts in this format, please. (ZooChat Challenge Global 2023 - 10th Anniversary Special! and ZooChat Challenge Global 2023 - 10th Anniversary Special!).
- @Marhi You can use one species from one visit in multiple categories. For example, Komodo dragon fits in with Red List, Island Hoppers, and Hot Blooded. You have several species that can go in multiple places that you’ve only used once. I’m not going to go back and fill this in for you. If you would like to make one updated post with it all fixed, and just include where you saw each, that’s fine and probably easiest
- @Neil chace Blue Jay does not count for Thylo’s Top 20, they must be a Corvus species, not just a corvid. Still deciding on if Nicobar counts for Island Hoppers.
- @nczoofan Desert cottontail and burrowing owl don’t count for Don’t Turn on the Lights, that isn’t a nocturnal set-up, just lower lighting. It needs to be dark/use alternative lighting. Madagascar ground boa does not count for Hot Blooded, they’re not pythons.
- @red river hog You have bongo listed twice for Let That Ruminate. You were also off by one on your count, so you’re at 9, not 11. Your list -
1-5 from DAK: Bongo, Greater Kudu, Blue Wildebeest, Sable, Bontebok
6 from Naples (you labelled it #7): Yellow-backed Duiker
7-9 from Tampa: Lowland Anoa, Nyala, Bay Duiker (plus bongo a second time)
For Usborne’s Scavenger Hunt you’ve listed Reeve’s Muntjac twice, at Tampa and DAK, so you’re at 14 and haven’t completed it.

And two clarifications:
Domestics don’t count this year, and European Mouflon has always counted as a domestic in USA challenges.
Inverts do not count.

- PLEASE make sure you are putting the locations in your posts! If you are including multiple visits in one post, you need to mark where you saw every animal. If a post spans multiple visits to the *same* facility, you need to put those dates.
- When posting updates, clear out old entries. There are 250 required animals, plus 5 open-ended challenges that will likely add another 90+ entries for the average member. It’s a lot to dig through, especially if you aren’t also doing the following two things.
- Number stuff. This helps both of us If our numbers don’t match, I know one of us screwed up somewhere.
- Changing text format – bolding and/or changing text color, especially – is your friend!

- Is this the same if you spend 2 days in a row at one facility, as I stayed over near and spent 2 days going round Chester last month (I assume it is, just making sure)?
Noted. I'll remove Blue Jay from my list for that category. I should see an actual Corvus later this year anyways, so it's not going to make a difference. I'm not really sure why Nicobar Pigeon is controversial for Island Hoppers, since it's island endemic except for the occasional vagrant, but I should see enough endemic birds to replace it next week.

I'll eventually upload photos but the curved horns and skull shape indicate pure Gaur and not Gayal. How can you be certain other participants aren't seeing "hybrids" on their visits.

, that didn't realize a lot of small lizards are in Agamidae and not just ones called agamas, so you're not alone there lol. Correct, hybrids don't count. If it's two days in a row it's not such a big deal, but it's easy enough to say you were there 10th-11th April or whatever. If it's the same facility you don't need to note which species you saw which days, just the days you were there. It's more because of things like a new species being signed but not out until several months later, that sort of thing.
Corvus is easy enough in the northeast
The head game official (lol) hasn't had a chance to double check past rulings for Nicobar yet, is all. I also had it but switched it out, easy enough to do with birds.Got all of those in, thanks. For gaur, that facility's animals came from Texas and the purity is very questionable; there's several places with "gaur" that have a lot of cattle blood in them. You're the only one that saw them at one of those facilities and not one of the AZA places with them. Thanks for those species names, as well. A few others were easy enough to definitively figure out, but those two didn't have certain answers so I didn't want to assume my guesses were correct. For bushmaster, there's two species in the USA, South American and Central American, but the English name signed is often just "bushmaster" (and sometimes the binomial name is wrong).

Thanks for explaining, it was the 4th and 5th of April if that means anything. It was mainly me thinking that I could possibly get a one zoo wonder over my trip, although I'm not sure how likely that will be anyway. Another reason was that I kind of treated it as one visit over two days, as I specifically split the trip into the west half of the zoo on the sunnier first day, and the east half on the rainy second. I did get through everything on the west side with more than enough time on the first day, so went over to the other half to start taking in some of the start attractions (Realm of the Red Ape, Spirit of the Jaguar briefly), so I probably could have seen a few more species that day if I really tried.

Yes. I am assuming they're new, since they were in a smaller area next to the giraffe savanna, which is normal for zoos introducing new individuals to an exhibit.

Again, I apologize for my absence and neglect of this game the past couple months. As I mentioned in the opening post, this will be my last year running the Global Challenge as, despite how much I enjoy the game, it’s clear that I simply do not have the time or mental energy to spend hours in ZC each week as I used to have. I had thought about not continuing after last year, but with this being the anniversary and my having such a grandiose plan, I wanted to see it through. I had been making time to check in every couple weeks and go through the new posts, but then between my new position at work, moving in with my partner, my new pets, my focus on improving my birding/wildlife watching skills, and preparing for the big trip I am taking this summer, it’s became harder to find time to catch up on the posts, and then after a while it became this big overwhelming task to try and catch up on months of content. That’s why, when a couple of weeks ago, @TinoPup offered to help me catch up on posts and corrections that needed to be made, I ultimately accepted her help.
For a couple weeks now, she has been helping me comb through everyone’s posts and seek out any errors that needed correcting. I can’t express how tremendously helpful she’s been in helping catch everything up and keeping everything organized. Where our communication failed was in regard to who/how the corrections would be handled. I didn’t realize she would be making a post herself, but I also hadn’t thought that far ahead. She was just trying to be helpful, knowing I’ve been so time crunched it would be easier for her to just handle it instead of waiting for me to have some free time. I understand how that would have been incredibly confusing for many of you. I take responsibility for not working that part out with her earlier. Ideally, if I wasn’t going to be the one to post, I’d have at least liked to have made a post ahead of time to let everyone know what was going on and that she was helping me out.
Now as for the corrections made in her post, any major things were all discussed with me while she was combing through people’s posts. I would like to clarify a few things, though:

- There is no requirement for how you have to format your posts, however, the use of the spoiler function, bolding or highlighting new additions, and keeping accurate numbering is immensely helpful. I do admit that the rules have never explicitly stated that you need to post where you’re seeing your species, but it has always been custom to include where you saw a species in your post and I would appreciate it if everyone did, it helps with verification where necessary. For the Embrace the ABCs Challenge, it is absolutely necessary you include the two locations you saw each species at as that is the only way to get credit for completing the challenge. I’m not going to ask anyone to fully recreate past posts, but in your next update please add in parenthesis where you saw animals that you didn’t already report on.
- As far as clearing out old entries in your new posts, it’s up to you whether or not you choose to do so. Some do, and some don’t. I never have in past challenges, but this is where bolding or highlighting your new species becomes very important, as well as mentioning where you saw it. With so many more species eligible and so many challenges, this is also where the spoiler function becomes very important.
- Photo proof is NOT required for any entries. As far as the Pine Mountain Gaur go, the only reason this is questionable is because the vast majority of “Gaur” outside of the AZA are more cow than wild cattle. I am curious as to whether @SusScrofa had any photos of these animals, but photos are not required as proof here. Regardless, the Bronx Gaur are the safer inclusion.
- I go back and forth on a species like European Mouflon, where it should be treated as domestic as traditionally done here or wild as done on other challenges, but it is worth noting that the IUCN doesn’t seem to consider the musimon a valid wild taxon, and that is the taxonomy we follow by and large.

For those that don't know me, I'd like to reassure everyone that I would never step in on a thread like this without permission! I am friends with Thylo (and Binh), and also helped on the ungulates thread. The partnership isn't unusual for us, but I now see how it could come across to others, especially non-Americans who might not be as familiar with me.
I hope the clarifications help, too. I did say none of the tips were required, except for the one, but they are really helpful. Now that I'm caught up it isn't as big of a deal, I should be able to keep up with the thread for the most part vs going through hundreds of posts in a short time.
In trying to be succinct I seem to have come across as stricter/harsher than I intended. I was trying to keep everything to the point, so that the post wasn't really long or hard to follow; I thought the occasional smiley face would help with that but I guess not
Most of what I post here on zc doesn't come from a negative place or have any implied tone behind it.
