I was not planning on returning to SeaWorld until after the new jellyfish exhibit opens; however, a day with nothing to do and the draw of the two new species that have gone on exhibit recently (plus a surprise third species -- the Brandt's cormorant!) were enough to get me back through the gates... And to an even 200 in this challenge :p

SeaWorld San Diego (San Diego, CA) - 03 June 2024:
Delphinidae:

199. Common dolphin (Delphinus delphis)

Sphenisciformes:
200. Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti)
I am apparently really good at not updating these challenge threads for exactly three months to the day :p

I finally visited by my very first European collections yesterday, Tiergarten Schönbrunn and the adjoining Wüstenhaus Schönbrunn! I will, of course, eventually be collecting my thoughts on my travels elsewhere, but I will just say that Schönbrunn absolutely lived up to the expectations! I loved it.

In seeing so many taxa for the first time yesterday, it reminded me of how traditionally in these challenges, newly seen animals for the competitors were bolded, and I am going to be bringing that back for my time in Europe :) As I also saw some taxa for the first time in American collections earlier this year, I will retroactively be bolding them when I post my collective, year-end list.

All of that said, it’s time for me to go look at some dead animals and paintings of animals today, so without further ado…

Tiergarten Schönbrunn (Vienna, AUT) - 03 September 2024:
Cervidae:

201. Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) [ssp. fennicus]

Felidae:
202. Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx)

Callitrichidae:
203. Western pygmy marmoset (Cebuella pygmaea)

Cercopithecidae:
204. Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus)
205. King colobus (Colobus polykomos)

Sphenisciformes:
206. Northern rockhopper penguin (Eudyptes moseleyi)

Crocodilia:
207. Morelet’s crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii)

Anura:
208. European treefrog (Hyla arborea)

Wüstenhaus Schönbrunn (Vienna, AUT) - 03 September 2024:
Orthoptera:

209. East African cave cricket (Phaeophilacris bredoides)

Thank you for the information! Sorry, I didn't know that rule...
I'll list up my records from January here anyways, as a reference.

I wish I knew about this earlier, and I'll begin in time next year!

Great list @Toki !
ZTL lists the Tibetan macaque at Japan Monkey Center. Do you know, if they still have the species?

Yes, Japan Monkey Center and Zoorasia has them.

Oh, I remember seeing and even taking a photo, but somehow dropped out from the list here!

I realize I'm obscenely late. We all know how real life has a way of getting in the way of things. I hope these observations will still count. I'm happy I could cross the acclaimed ABQ Biopark off my bucket list. One of the most beautiful zoos I've ever visited, and a splendid aquarium too.

Welcome to Europe @Kudu21 ! I am looking forward to your lists and to your thoughts regarding the European big collections and wish you a lot of new life ticks :)
Thank you very much, @twilighter! So far I have been having the absolute best of times, and I definitely expect that to continue! :)

Welcome to the challenge! I think you might be the first to enter from Japan, so I’m glad you decided to join. Unfortunately, one of the rules states that if you are to join the challenge after April, only your last two visits will be eligible. When I enter your data into the challenge tracker, it will reflect this.

Speaking as the current leader, to be honest I’m only going to feel I have ‘won’ if I have the highest species total, regardless of what’s counted and what’s not according to the date posted.

To be honest I'm not the biggest fan of that new rule. It just feels kind of mean tbh.

It’s not a new rule, it’s designed to prevent people popping up late in the year with result-altering leads. I’m very confident that isn’t Toki’s intention though - they are a new member of the site and it makes sense that they have only just found the challenge and decided to participate.

I think you've earned that total, regardless. :p

I'll be honest, I kinda shot myself in the foot with that one too when I didn't make an update for all my zoo visits this summer (Omaha, all of California) :P. But the rule was implemented to prevent people from swooping in so far into the challenge and, figuratively, "stealing the game". I adopted it from the North America challenge.

This is the first year this rule has been in place for the global challenge.
