I should point out that the American Crocodile is only mentioned in passing because I'm not 100% sure... during the Nile Crocodile feeding talk, the keeper definitely mentioned one of the crocodiles in the tank was "an American croc", but I'm not fully sure of the context here. I definitely saw all the crocodiles in said exhibit, though.

Also, TRIPLE DIGITS! Possibly a personal best for me in these challenges.

Next up was Plzeň. Plzeň was not originally on the docket for this trip (we were originally going to be spending the weekend in Bohemian Switzerland National Park); however, after walking 10 miles every day for five days, my partner decided his poor office job legs could not withstand the idea of hiking :p So we made the day trip down to Plzeň instead! And I am glad we did. It was certainly not the best zoo we visited... but the grounds are beautiful and I found that I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would, despite its short-comings.

How did it take you so long to get Wapiti? :p

You’re going to draw this out, aren’t you? :p
You're still in the lead, if that's what you're getting at :p It is not my intention or desire to drag out my updates. I have just gone straight back to work after getting back, so I have not had a lot of consecutive time to sit down and type everything up, format it, cross-reference IUCN, etc.

How did it take you so long to get Wapiti? :p
It was kind of funny to not get them until then, especially a subspecies native to my own state that I had still yet to see :p We just do not really have wapiti in the Southwest! It's one of the few deer species that the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and Wildlife World Zoo combined do not have, haha. The closest ones to me would be Bearizona or Oakland, which are both over seven hours away.

Next up are two small updates from Zoo Dresden and Zoo Leipzig! Dresden is a really delightful little zoo that I enjoyed a very pleasant afternoon/evening in on our way from Prague to Leipzig. Leipzig is, of course, a zoological behemoth that took all of the next day to tour, and I am very happy to report that all of the themed complexes lived up to their reputations.

Zoo Dresden (Dresden, DEU) - 09 September 2024:
Cervidae:

Hog deer (Axis porcinus)

Atelidae:
Venezuelan red howler monkey (Alouatta seniculus)

Zoo Leipzig (Leipzig, DEU) - 10 September 2024:
Cercopithecidae:

Diana monkey (Cercopithecus diana)
Owl-faced guenon (Cercopithecus hamlyni)

Anura:
Bornean rock frog (Staurois parvus)
Montserrat whistling frog (Eleutherodactylus johnstonei)

Oxudercinae:
Atlantic mudskipper (Periophthalmus barbarus)

I don't know what happened to the numbering in this post? So I have edited them back in to the quote above.

Leipzig was followed up by another colossal, Zoo Berlin. The history at Zoo Berlin is palpable as you walk its grounds and admire its buildings. While it certainly has its flaws, there is a je ne sais quoi about the place that really gets under your skin.

You have seen so many rarities in North America and It's amazing to see how many lifters you got in a few days! I only can imagine your excitement :)

I think we’re going to finish our respective trips with you very much within striking distance, should you have any further travel within the US up your sleeve. I expect my tally to be about 98% complete at this stage.

It was truly incredible! And that's only considering the lifers that count for this challenge! Between seeing so many new species, so many historically important exhibits, so many new and innovative exhibits, day after day, I do not think I have ever been quite so excited :p

I naturally followed up Zoo Berlin with Tierpark Berlin the very next day :p Even with all that I knew about the facility and all of the times I had been warned, I was truly not prepared for the sheer scale of the place! It is truly massive! And absolutely filled to the brim with zoological delights.

(@ZooBinh - In putting together this update, I realized I accidentally swapped the scientific names for the White's tree frog (Litoria caerulea) from Prague and the white-lipped tree frog (Litoria infrafrenata) from Tierpark Berlin when I originally posted my Prague update, so the Prague animals were Litoria caerulea and the Tierpark animals were Litoria infrafrenata.)

I have just gotten back from a trip to South Dakota and managed to hit up Reptile Gardens during my stay. Along with a handful of crocodilians, this facility also gave me a new frog credit (the Budgett's Frog). Unfortunately, their Tomato Frogs were no shows and I only realized after the fact that I did not have this species for this year. I am also including a handful of tree frogs that I saw at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences that I forgot to include earlier, and which I saw again on a more recent visit.

And that might be it for me this year. I don't plan on visiting anymore new facilities for the remainder of the year, and for the places I do visit regularly, I already have everything that is eligible.

*This Caiman was identified by a keeper for me.

I ended up having time to put together a couple more updates today! Nürnberg uses its beautiful locale to its advantage, with its beautiful wooded and topographically varied exhibits, and the two major marine mammal complexes for manatees and dolphins are by and far the most impressive marine mammal exhibits I have ever seen! Wilhelma is the zoo that, perhaps, surprised me the most. I was looking forward to its new Terra Australis house and its beautiful imperial gardens, but I was really unsure how much I would enjoy the rest of the zoo... And the answer is very much! Despite the chill in the air and the light rain, I thoroughly enjoyed my day at Wilhelma!

I have one last update from my two-and-a-half week European adventure: Zoo Frankfurt. I did not originally plan on visiting Frankfurt on this trip; however, after staying a second night in Stuttgart thanks to the free housing provided by a very generous colleague, and a flight not until late in the afternoon, we decided to do a quick tour of Zoo Frankfurt to pass the extra time in the morning. We only had two hours in the zoo, so we soaked in the Grzimek Haus and the Exotarium and then quickly did the rest of the exterior of the zoo, missing much of the central portion. From a historical standpoint, I am glad to have visited and to have seen it as it is/was. That said, it is undoubtedly showing its age in a lot of areas, and in a rather unpleasant way... I hope that the recently released masterplan for the zoo will help to bring it into 21st Century while still respecting its historical importance.

Zoo Frankfurt (Frankfurt, DEU) - 17 September 2024:
Acrobatidae:
319. Feathertail glider (Acrobates pygmaeus)

Cheirogaleidae:
320. Grey mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus)

Aotidae:
321. Grey-handed night monkey (Aotus griseimembra)

Cercopithecidae:
322. Red-capped mangabey (Cercocebus torquatus)

Felidae:
323. Rusty-spotted cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus)

Anura:
324. Basin white-lipped frog (Leptodactylus syphax)
325. Smooth-sided toad (Rhaebo guttatus)
326.Vicente’s poison frog (Oophaga vicentei)
327. Yucatán shovel-headed tree frog (Triprion petasatus)

And thus ends the big 2024 trip.

Singapore Zoo - 21/9/2024
369. Red-shanked douc langur - Pygathrix nemaeus
370. Dragon-headed katydid - Eumegalodon blanchardi
371. Proboscis monkey - Nasalis lavartus

River Wonders - 22/9/2024
372. Mudskipper sps. - Periophthalmodon septemradiatus

(This is the Latin name on the exhibit. I haven’t been able to find a recognised common name for this one.)

Night Safari - 23/9/2024
373. Southern red muntjac - Muntiacus muntjak
374. Spotted giant flying squirrel - Petaurista elegans

S.E.A. Aquarium - 26/9/2024
375. Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin - Tursiops aduncus
376. Reef manta ray - Mobula alfredi

I’m making an educated guess on the dolphins - I can’t imagine they’re the Atlantic species, but if anyone knows they are let me know and I’ll remove it.

At some point in the next few days I’ll post a consolidated list of all 376 species seen so far. I might have a couple more in me, but not outside Australia. I’m basically done,

One last update from Europe, but not quite the last update of the trip just yet.

Nuremberg Zoo - 10/9/2024

362. Atlantic bottlenose dolphin - Tursiops truncatus
