I just got back from my first visit to a zoological facility this year; the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, which I mainly visited just to nab the few snake credits they still have on display (a good chunk of their snake collection has been off-exhibit coming on a year now).

Current Total - 8 species
  1. North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences (January 2025)
    1. Eastern Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix)
    2. Eastern Milksnake (Lampropeltis triangulum)
    3. Emerald Tree Boa (Corallus caninus)
    4. Northern Cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus)
    5. Pygmy Rattlesnake (Sistrurus miliarius)
    6. South American Milksnake (Lampropeltis micropholis)*
    7. Tamaulipan Milksnake (Lampropeltis annulata)*
    8. Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus)
*The museum has these snakes still labeled as subspecies of Lampropeltis triangulum (L. t. gaigae and L. t. annulata, respectively). However, I use iNaturalist to compile my species lists, and the taxon schemes/authorities they source from (mainly GBIF, also Reptile Database and SSAR for reptiles) do not recognize Lampropeltis triangulum as having any valid subspecies; instead, the relevant taxon have been elevated to full species. I have no idea how controversial this is on ZooChat (it was quite controversial on iNaturalist, but they still adopted it nonetheless), but if it proves too problematic, please let me know. But for what it's worth, IUCN also recognizes both as distinct species.

This is my first time participating, as all of the previous challenges since I joined have been almost impossible to do here in India. I stand no chance of coming close to even the top half, but I thought it might be fun to take part anyway.
Bannerghatta Zoo - (2nd January)
1. Tiger Panthera tigris
2. Asiatic Black Bear Ursus thibetanus
3. Dhole Cuon alpinus
4. Striped Hyena Hyena hyena
5. Golden Jackal Canis aureus
6. Grey Wolf Canis lupus

11. Indian Gharial Gavialis gangeticus
12. Spectacled Caiman Caiman crocodilus
13. Green Anaconda Eunectes murinus

15. King Cobra Ophiophagus hannah
16. Spectacled Cobra Naja naja
17. Indian Rat Snake Ptyas mucosa
18. Raccoon Dog Nyctereutes procyonoides

One additional species (Asian Palm Civet) was signed and technically accessible from the path, but the path access was partially blocked off by a barrier. I saw many other guests viewing the civets as well. Am I allowed to count the species?

If you saw the species during the normal opening hours, even in a off- limit exhibit, you can count it :)
